No he wasn't, Vincente Mosquera was. Sadly Valero beat Mosquera in to retirement. As for Valero's future no doubt with his all time great power and aggressiveness he was going to do great things

im of the opinion that he was a top flight boxing talent. there's footage of him looking like a beast in sparring sessions and in the gym, if not in the ring as a pro

      his power was overrated

trojans is on the record somewhere around here saying he's "the hardest puncher ever at LW" which is laughable

I said that along with Mosley he was the hardest hitting lightweight of the last 40 years. Also would you care to explain how his power was overrated

you really need me to do that?
once you watch boxing for long enough you know power when you see it

it took him 9 rounds of clean punching to put antonio demarco away

and people like you (if there are indeed others) think he's "the hardest hitting LW of the last 40 years"

thats overrated to the point of being comical

Edwin Valero is almost like the new Tony Ayala. Its hard to tell how good he was but its evident that he had alot of talent

9 rounds of clean punching? Did you even watch the fight?

1st of all Valero had a HUUUUUGE gash which clearly slowed him down.

2nd of all Demarco protected his chin at all cost Valero was only landing to the top of the head. Also since when is stopping a guy in a championship fight who has never been stopped in 9 rounds a bad thing?

3rd of all if you knew power then you could see the way guys reacted to his punches it the same way guys react to George Foreman. Guys like Pitlua who allegedly hadn't been knocked down in ten years were getting stunned by partially block punches

that cut never bled into his eye
it looked like it was bothering him the sense that having a huge cut might bother somebody, but in boxing terms it was far enough away from the eye and they stanched most of the bleeding anyway.

he was landing combinatios flush on demarco and tagging him to the body
what fight were you watching? did you have demarco ahead or something? antonio demarco's last TV fight was against an absolute nobody, and he looked TERRIBLE

you're seriously calling him the best puncher in 40 years at the weight based on that?
he had only just become a lightweight!
he had a whopping 18 rounds as a LW
the guy had 3 fights at lightweight dude, and in the historical sense they were against nobodies. complete nobodies.

i'll go so far as to say that valero isn't even as hard of a puncher as rios by a stretch

i always though he was a very talented boxer and underrated defensively and in terms of the subtleties of boxing, but in terms of punching power you're overdoing it about as much as it can be overdone

Thanks fellas, some interesting points made, from the gist of things he seemed talented but fought bums and looked beastly in sparring

With a GIGANTIC cut like that it doesn't have to get in your eye, its going to slow
                      anybody down.

Go watch the fight again Demarco protected his chin very well Valero landed almost nothing flush on his chin after round 3, only on the forehead where its almost impossible to knock somebody down. Demarco basically went in a shell for the last few rounds because Valero's power punches took a severe toll.

And who cares if Demarco didn't look good for a fight he coasted during the second half because he knew he won and Sanchez isn't much of a puncher. Not to mention not to many young fighters are able to comeback after a beating like the one Valero gave him

LOL I am one of Rios biggest fans but lol Rios is a good puncher but he needs an accumulation of punches he doesn't have any 1 punch power like Valero has consistently shown.
