the most talented finisher i've ever seen was salvador sanchez
it's a shame we didn't get a chance to see him fight more and put some more scalps on his belt

he had everything you need to be a finisher. it begins and ends with your temperament.
he had power in both hands from all over the place with a ton of snap
    to the body and head.
tons of handspeed and perfect timing
and he had a dynamite chin
finishing is about taking risks, it helps to have a great chin to develop the temperament to not be denied when you see a man wilt

the subtleties of finishing can be developed (obviously with the talent god gives a fighter)
but the man that smells blood in the water and goes for the kill is born that way

EDit: he doesn't get enough love here, and he belongs at or near the top
archie moore could knock a man out by accident
Agreed! Moore always, always, comes to mind when talking KO. More props to the king.

How about the ridiculously under appreciated Harry Mathews? Marciano fought Ted Lowry twice, and could not knock him out in either fight. Mathews fought and KO'd Lowry in the fifth. 90 wins 61 KO's and only 7 losses. Mathews may not be the best finisher in boxing history when compared to the likes found on JAB's list, but is definitely worth a mention and a little remembering.

Excellent thread at first I wanted to just answer "Well my man Rocco of course" but thinking about Joe, and Jack really made me realize, or at least think about, How his KO's are kind of a brand. They're distinct, but so are Joe Louis' and Mike Tyson's. Looking through the names people have posted it's safe to say all the greats come with their vary own flavor. which makes it damn near impossible to say Boxer A is the hands down greatest finisher of all time and know you've got no personal bias due to "cool" factor. To me the absolute coolest moment in boxing was the Suzie Q on Walcott. Was that a damn excellent finish? Yeah, but was it in some way technically superior or inferior to Tyson's KO on Tillman?

Wilfredo Gomez was like a lion when he had his man hurt.
Antonio Cervantes and Jose Napoles deserve mentions here as well.

            Obviously Louis and Robinson...

Also, Juan Manuel Marquez deserves a shout (and if not me, who's gonna do it haha). He's not a monster puncher, but if he hurts you, you're done. Look at the Katsidis, Diaz and Casamayor fights in particular. It looked like Katsidis had a magnet in his face in the ninth round, Diaz really never got a chance to recover from that tremendous overhand-triple-left-uppercut combination (seriously, what the fuck, Marquez? That combination was incredible) and Casamayor was done as soon as he wobbled.

I'd disagree with the Dempsey call. Looking at the Willard and the Long Count fights in particular. He should have blasted Willard out of there in the second round with the way he was beating him up, instead, Willard quit on his stool. And Tunney was hurt pretty bad and Dempsey let him off the hook. Great and extremely violent fighter, but not one of the guys I think of when I think of a closer.

I think you have to look at his entire record, not just this one fight. Lets not forget he was fighting a guy 60lbs heavier than himself. Thiere are things about Dempseys career I question, but his ferocity and finishing skills are not one of them.

Some good choices mentioned so far.

No love for George Foreman though? When Lyle was hurt he jumped all up in that ass it was just Lyle has just as much power to hurt him. But more then likely if Foreman didn't put you out with one punch, the next one or two would.

                    add him to the list!
if i were building a finisher i'd lean towards the hook as the shot to seal the deal

                    and a bantamweight at that
