So why was Muhammad Ali so mean to Joe Frazier?

And an interesting one.

It’s a dark cloud on Ali’s legacy. It wasn’t necessary.
But as I understand, Ali later regretted it.
As most of us do, for actions we did in the past.

Ali was a master of phycological warfare. He also knew how to promote a fight.

Ali was not afraid of Frazier. He knew he could push his buttons and he did so to gain an advantage. His antics also greatly promoted his fights.

Plus there must have been some jealousy. Ali was banned from boxing and then Fraizer comes in and is the new champ and then beats him. Ali was used to having the spotlight and being the champ.

He always teased and bragged against opponents, I know, but he went beyond calling people bears and rabbits with Frazier. I mean damn, did Frazier not help him during his 3 year exile? I never understood why he went so deep against Frazier. Was he just intimidated, trying to get into his head for the fight?

Ali later said that he never meant the things he said, but it was just all to promote the fight. The more heated the hatred between two fighters gets, the more interest the fight generates from the public. Ali's antics helped break closed-circuit theater sales records (which have never been beaten to this day), and made both himself and Frazier a lot richer... but in the end, Ali got screwed-over by people he trusted, ending up a broke and damaged man.

To be fair everyone called him Clay.
It wouldn't surprise me if at the time a lot of people
at first just saw the name change as a cheap gimmick.

There's also the connection he had with that racist Alabama Sheriff, but I can't seem to remember the Sheriff's name and the article I read it from. Maybe someone who has read it will post here.
