    Lou Savarese

What do you think of him? I know most will remember him only 4 the Tyson fight, but he was actually half decent.

He stopped Buster Mathis Jr in 7. Alot feel he was robbed against Foreman in 97. He KO'd James Buster Douglas in 1 round, who was on a 6 fight win streak. (Roy Jones Jr dad told his son in 96 not to fight the comebacking Douglas).

Savarese also beat 18-0 Lance Whitaker, Whitaker was being highly touted going into the bout. Lou also stopped a ageing Tim Witherspoon in 5.

Am not saying Savarese was anything great, but I don't think he was as bad as made out to be.

I never thought Lou Savarese was very good... His wins were never overly impressive or showcased any real skillset, and he lost all of his big fights.

You mention that Douglas was KO'd in 1 round but he had not been in any fight shape since feb of 1990 and was in the most terrible condition I have ever seen from a heavyweight.

The Douglas fight was fairly big, and most do feel he should of got the Forerman fight to.

Look at buster in the video you have posted. The only thing "big" about that fight was busters gullet. He had been in and out of the hospital after almost nearly dying from gaining so much weight, was a diabetic and his heart was having problems because of his weight. He looks awful in that fight so to use that as a case for Savarese being a good fighter or underrated is not helping your case.

Buster may have just needed the money because he was in no condition to go more than 1 or 1.5 minutes with anybody.

Savarese took a one sided beatdown from a shot Mike Tyson who himself was in no condition to fight more than just a few rounds. If he were a halfway decent fighter, or "good" as you say he would have given Tyson a lot more problems, lasted longer, and maybe may have beat him.

His neck was always frozen stiff when a fighter would advance or throw a punch and he never put his gloves up or moved his head. Savarese just wasn't very good.

Well Douglas was a threat. Roy Jones Jr vs Douglas was on in 96 @ HW, only for Jones's dad to talk Roy out of it, saying Buster was to dangerous.

If Buster was that much of non threat, why did Roy listen and pull out of the fight?

Because he was fighting at super middleweight at that time and there were many good fights coming together in that division. Roy would have nothing to gain by moving all the way up to heavyweight and fighting Buster Douglas. If you are going to do something like move up so far in weight, you will want to at least take on a legitimate fighter, which Buster was not. There was no plus side, and beating Buster would do nothing for his career.

The Roy that weighed 199 and fought John Ruiz would have zero problems knocking out Buster Douglas.

I am thinking the fight was being talked about in the later 90's, not as early as 96. Do you have a link?

Well it was shortly before the Savarese fight.

After Roy declined, Buster then fought Lou and we seen what happened. My point is, if Buster was that much of a non threat like you said, why did Roy decline, when there was a career high $6 million payday on the table?

That fight was far from a robbery. And to be honest I don't remember a lot of people thinking it was.

I thought Foreman won. That was how good Savarese was though, he was able to fight a close fight with a 43+ year old Foreman but he was without Foreman like power. His blowout over Douglas was after Douglas' return from a life threatening bout with diabetes. Douglas was also recovering from a after the bell knockout to Louis Monico.

Even in the Whitaker win he lost the early rounds and came back as Whitaker tired out to take the decision. Savarese might have been likable but loses to guys like David Izon hurt his career.
