Go to pbs.org and type in Jack Johnson for your search. There you can find a dvd entitled " Unforgivable Blackness: The Rise and Fall of Jack Johnson" by Ken Burns.
I'm waiting for Jan to tune in to PBS. Got two items on my calendar for next year that are heavily highlighted: That for Jan and Pac-Marquez for Feb!
BTW Ken Burns' documentary is based on the book by the same name by Geoffrey C. Ward.
Good book from what I hear, I have yet to read it. But the documentary was downright great.
Perhaps we can get a recommended book list. Boxing and Sports History in general is a burgeoning field right now, and there are several great books out there.
why would ali want to be like johnson?a big ape looking black man who couldnt get a black woman so he ran to what the white man didnt want?why would ali want to be ko'd by middleweights and then duck all of the good black fighters once he won the title?johnson was just a loud mouth fool who is only remembered because he was the first black to win the heavyweight title that and nothing more..nothing about the way he boxed could be classifeid as being good..a glass chin..a boring style .bacially punch and hold punch and hold and keep doing this until your opponent got tired..most of the guys he fought were smaller than him besides jeffries and when he fought jim he was old and probably didnt really want to box anymore.he came back because people probably forced him to do it because they wanted some white guy to beat him..johnson was a disgrace to the black race
Brought a lot of it on himself, he could have kept quite and got on with his boxing (not saying thats what he should do) and took a little less bs. Kinda funny now to think of all the trouble they went to, to get rid of him. Very diffrent world then heh.

All this you are saying is pure trash and bs. jack johnson was muhammad ali before his time. he revolutionized boxing by tranforming the art of pugilism into the sweet science. he punched hard, fast, quick combinations, when nobody was doing that. even though the great fighters of the 70s and 80s would probably beat him, he was weigh ahead of his time. He is also Jackie Robinson before his time. He broke the color barrier of HW boxing 40 years before robinson. even though he had his problems, which person doesn't? nobody's a saint. he took the pain and the weight of black america at the time on his more than capable shoulders. and as for he couldn't get a black woman WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT? HE WAS HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION OF THE WORLD! HE COULD HAVE GOTTEN ANY WOMAN HE WANTED! If someone as ugly as mike tyson could get Robyn Givens, who is to say johnson could'nt have done the same thing? But his preference was white woman and that is what he got. To me, someone like willy mays is the greatest baseball player, but jackie robinson is by far the most important. Likewise, muhammad ali is the greatest boxer, but Jack Johnson was the most important.
