I think he something to the effect of, I'll never let a black man beat me. Which unfortunately added a racial undertone to the fight build up, which the fight didn't need.

In my view, yes it was.Minter was the champion, and he deserved another round or two before deciding whether it was right for him to continue. It was an exciting fight while it lasted, and Minter took the fight to Hagler and had his moments.

I'm not a racist, and have not had a sip of alcohol since New Year's Eve,and yet, this stoppage, some thirty years on is one that still angers and confuses me a great deal.I can only imagine how those in attendance that night must have felt.

Minter got a cut below his eye in the first round. He got a second cut above his eye in the second round. It was a dodgy end to a world title fight to be fair, especially for a champ.

However, Minter didn't do himself any favours after that fight losing to Mustapha Hamsho and Tony Sibson soon after. Theres not really much doubt Minter didn't deserve a belt he could only defend once succesfully before failing in both cases of getting a second shot at it.

He wasn't all that, we probably agree on that.

Did the fans deserve a better fight?

Yeah, but Minter didn't give them one.
