Michael Spinks...The HEAVYWEIGHT: What level of fighter would he be in the seventies?

What fighter of the seventies heavyweight division would you compare the heavyweight Michael Spinks to? Not in stylistic terms, but on what level? Was he as good a heavyweight as Ken Norton? More of an Ellis? A Quarry? A much faded Patterson? Who would you put him on the level of? What would he be considered as if he had only fought at heavyweight in the seventies? Could he have been a champion in the manner of Ellis (temporary, until a Frazier level man comes along)?

Spinks was good! He would have a fair chance over many fighters in the 70s. I wouldn't expect him to beat the best 70s versions of Ali, Holmes, Foreman, Frazier or even Lyle for that matter.

But like Jimmy Young, I could see him scoring some good victories. I'd rate him above the Ellis's and Bonavena's. But below Norton.

That's pretty much where I am at with this too. I was just curious if there would be a general consensus or if there'd be some highly differing opinions on the subject.

But who would he have beaten for the championship?

I'd give him a slight chance of beating the Frazier that turned up for Foreman, but not the 1971 Frazier.

I'm very doubtful about his chances against 1973 Foreman......considering what Tyson did to Spinks!

He'd have a fair chance against 1977/78 Ali.......hell his brother Leon beat Ali in 1978, so its not too ridiculous a suggestion, Ali was well on the slide of course!!

I think the 1977/78 Norton probably had still a touch too much for Spinks judging by his fights with Ali (76), Young (77) and Holmes (78).

But I think that 1978 Holmes clearly beats Spinks. Hell the 1985/86 Holmes only lost by the smallest of small margins in both fights.

I see him as a cross between Ellis and Norton. As a Heavyweight Spinks was never really outstanding and his trainer Eddie Futch admitted as much. ATG Light-Heavy, but no more than a solid contender at Heavyweight.
