Whitaker vs Ramirez 1

I always thought this fight was much closer than many felt. Ramirez was the aggressor while PW mostly back peddled while using the jab and countering. Ramirez was the champ and kept going forward through the fight and landed some solid punches as well. I could have seen it as a draw and the champ keeps his belt. Ironically, if whitaker won he would have faced Chavez at that time.

I've never scored this fight but remember watching it live on a late Saturday afternoon and thinking it was a white wash. Ramirez was never in it in my opinion. I agree he pressed the action, but Pea showed great ring generalship and countered him easily in my opinion. HUGE robbery if you ask me.

I agree with you. You took the words right out of my mouth. There is no way RAMIREZ won that fight! Even worse is how PEA shut him out in the rematch He came for blood from the beginning. PEA never was beaten in his PRIME. That's a RARE stat for any fighter. He was a boxing GOD along with ALI, ROBINSON, and LEONARD.

Ramirez clearly won a few rounds and even Sweet Pea would concede that. If that is one of the biggest robberies than WTF does that make Lews vs Holyfield 1 or even Whitaker vs Chavez?

Whitaker admitted he broke his right hand in one of the early rounds and thus couldnt lead effectively with it, Ramirez ate most of the Whitaker punches and YES he did land some solid punches on Whitaker in the second half of the fight. Whitaker was not to use fighting a fellow southpaw and was more cautious in taking the lead.

I never scored it, but i wouldn't say Sweet pea won it 117-111 as some throught or even 116-112, it could have been scored 115-113 Whitaker, but as i said in my initial post it was much closer due to Whitaker's injured hand.
Even Duva told him "we need round 12" at the corner.

If you notice, he fought going forward against Haugen in his next title match, a fight he totally dominated.


In the Ramirez rematch Whitaker being healthy was able to win convincingly. He landed more combinations and went to the body more often. There was no back pedaling which may tilt a close round to the opponents favor.

I never thought whitaker loss the fight and thought some of the judges scorecards were outrageous, but i never saw it as one of the biggest robberies as people have said.

Yes it was one of the biggest RIP-OFF decision EVER! RAMIREZ was bigger, stronger, longer than PEA and still couldn't touch him consistantly. 115-113 is a little unreal in my book. It was more like 117-110, 118-111. It was one of the worse decisions because PEA was undefeated and getting big time press. People were starting to notice him. He was becoming very popular for the sport. You don't cheat a fighter like that nomatter who it is when he dominated the fight.

i agree with Jab and the guys that this was one of the biggest robberies in the last 50yrs Whitaker was the clear winner

Clean, effective punching is the main scoring criteria in boxing, Ramirez was probably able to count on one hand how many effective punches he landed in that fight. There is effective and ineffective aggression, Ramirez was definitely ineffective that night.

The fact that you would even try to make a case for a fighter who's only argument to winning two or three rounds was the fact that his opponent wasn't doing anything is completely ridiculous.
