Thoughts On A Prime Robinson's Draw With Jose Basora and Henry Brimm?

These draws came at the peak of Robinson's career.

The first one was against Jose Basora in 1945. Report of the bout....
The official round-by-round scorecards were: Daggert, 4-4-2; Lasky 5-4-1 in favor of Basora; Knaresborough 6-4 in favor of Robinson. It was a hard-fought but not exciting battle, except for several sizzling exchanges. Basora counterpunched effecively. Robinson landed more punches but missed a lot. Neither fighter seemed able to hurt the other. Basora's manager, Chris Dundee, said "We ain't satisfied with a draw." Robinson said "I did my beat but wasn't at my best. Basora is a tough boy, maybe not so tough as Jake LaMotta, but tough enough."
Basora would go on to be a jourynman and 5 years later Robinson KO'd him in 1. But I pretty surprised Ray didnt to the same thing back in 1945. After the draw with Ray, the fight after Jake Lamotta stopped him in 9.

And 4 years on he then drew with the 23-9-2 Henry Brimm. Robinson never anvenged the draw and Brimm would go on to lose 9 of his next 14 bouts. Was Robinson injured or something for this bout? Very strange result to say the least.

After his first ever defeat to LaMotta, he went into overdrive and had something like 10 fights in 4 months until he eventually got LaMotta back in the ring and beat him to even the score.. He then sat on his laurels for a while and enjoyed a 3 month break which was a long time for Robinson, and the draw against Basora came in his 1st fight back - a warm up that he grossly underestimated and admitted afterwards, that he wasn't in the best of shape for..
As for the Brimm draw, i'm not sure, but Robinson liked to party from time to time and that may have had something to do with it.. But well spotted, the word unbeaten does tends to put a blind spot on the draws.. Good thread!

Always remember a top welterweight taking on a top middle is supposed to result in the welter getting his ass kicked but good.

Suger is so great people now have an attitude like it was something always expected of him. Basora was a hellva fighter, highly avoided.

yep, as often as ray fought, an off night isn't something to hold against him.
