I was wondering, I haven't read this book. Is it down and dirty(truthful) about King's known doings, or is it nice like it was put out by Kings publicist?

It's definitely not a book that made King happy.

One time, Jack Newfield kept questioning King about some shady thing that happened, and King yelled at him in front of all the video cameras. It was on one of those TV news programs, Dateline or something like that.

'Raging Bull' and 'The Four Kings' are good reads.

'Raging bull' was decent, but overrated in my opinion. I mention this every time one of these threads pops up, but 'Barney Ross' by Douglas Century was an excellent read.

“If I were the education president every White House inhabitant claims to be, the reforms would begin with putting Douglas Century’s new biography, Barney Ross on the required-reading list.”
                  Chicago Tribune

“This is an excellent story of a man and his times. And proof positive that time does not relinquish its hold over men or monuments. In a sport devoted to fashioning halos for its superstars, Ross wore a special nimbus, and this book properly fits him for that.”
                  New York Times Book Review

“It is not often that a modern biography ennobles not only its subject but the genre itself, but this is exactly what Mr. Century has accomplished, crafting a narrative as unsparing and inspiring as its subject.”
                  New York Sun
