If Jones had moved to cruiserweight in 2003

Say Roy Jones had moved to cruiserweight in 2003 and had fights with the likes of Mormeck and Toney and then moved up to heavyweight how do you think he would have done?

The 2003 Jones would have beaten Toney and Mormeck. His chin and legs were very much still intact then!

I wouldn't have fancied his chances over Lewis or either Klitchko though......too big, too heavy handed.

Hell without the move back to lightheavy he may have still been quite good now.

2003 Jones Jr. beats Toney just like he beat Toney at 168, he gets caught by Braithwaite while out boxing him. Mormeck is all wrong for Jones he would bull him into the corner and chop him to shreds, Jones Jr. isn't strong enough to keep Mormeck off him and the pressure would wear him out very quickly. He outboxes Bell to a wide UD, he can't hurt Bell but Bell doesn’t apply enough pressure to land his signature bombs. If my memory is correct those three were the top cruiserweights at the time. Roy’s lack of strength and power would be his undoing against the cruiserweights, his chin is simply average at 168/175, at 200 it would be a liability in my opinion. Against fighters who don’t apply a lot of pressure and prefer to box he could win by virtue of his speed, but against mauler’s like Mormeck and guys who can box and drop bombs ala Braithwaite he would get caught. Outside of those guys I would venture most of the rest of the cruiserweights he could outbox (I’m generalizing there may be a few awkward southpaws I’m forgetting or slick counter punchers my memory from 2003 is a bit foggy I get hit in the head too much I think…) but due to his chin he would always be at risk of getting KO’d. It would have been fun to watch Roy against a guy like Braithwaite though.

I believe he was a fool to drop all the way down to Lightheavy after the Ruiz fight. Jones Jr. weighted around 195 against Ruiz with very little body fat. When he announced he was moving down to 175 to fight Tarver, I told everybody Tarver was going to destroy him and people didn't believe me. No way someone thats trim can lose twenty pounds and not lose alot of strength.
But Jones was a risk taker. Always challenging himself, wether he played basketball the same day as a title fight or wore a microphone during another title fight. And he moved down in weight. It ruined him!

For the record I also told Chris Byrd not to drop down to Light heavy and he did and guess what happened.

(I myself tried dropping two weight classes in the amateurs and was pathetic, little guys were so much stronger than me that night and I learned my lession)

That being said I also believe if Jones went to cruiserweight he could have beat most of the guys from that era.
