Ok, he got taken apart by arguably the divisions most monstrous puncher ever.

Who else aside from Bonovena floored or badly hurt him?

Struggle to picture him as chinny given the amount of leather he took off Ali (a sharp enough hitter to take out Ole George) without goin over.

Well,he took on one puncher his entire career and we all know what happened there - two mismatches and eight knockdowns.

Joe Frazier has been put on the canvas around the same amount of times that Wladimir Klitschko has,and hasn't faced the amount of punchers that Wladimir Klitschko has and yet Wladimir Klitschko is often derided or his inability to take a solid shot.

I don't really understand why people call Hearns chinny? He didn't have a granite chin but I don't think he had a bad chin at all. He was knocked out by Leonard, which was due to exhaustion, not his chin even slightly, and apart from that only Hagler and huge punching MW Barkley were able to do him in.

The fact he went from WW (147) to CW (200 today) without getting knocked out more than that shows he had a pretty damn good chin and he was hittable and often did get hit.

If you have gone through his career, you'll have seen him take monstrous shots from a lot of guys and just laugh and come straight back. Only two guys really were able to do him in.

He wasn't like Norris who would get knocked down by a jab repeatedly.

Silva? Did you say Benitez was chinny? How mate?

My impression of a "puncher" is that of someone who possesses terrific power and I myself have never seen Quarry this way.

Certainly not,but he does have power

Leonard didn't knock him out because Hearns was exhausted,he knocked him out because Leonard had battered him in rounds six and seven and Hearns had never recovered from those two rounds.Hearns boxed well from that point onwards but his legs were still shaky and the amount of pressure Leonard had put on him was too much for him to bare after getting hurt late on once again.

Tommy was often hurt throughout his career such as in in both bouts with Ray Leonard, his fight with Hagler,in both bouts with Barkley,in his fight with Kinchen,in his tremendous war with Freddie Delgado ect.

Hearns very rarely recovered when hurt,he boxed on pure heart against Delgado,Kinchen and Barkley the second time.

A chin is not what I would associate with Thomas Hearns but he had as big a heart as any fighter that has ever fought.

Yep, fair enough. I certainly agree that Hearns' heart was second to none. However, I still don't think he had a bad chin. Yes, he got hurt and knocked down, but I don't think he was chinny as such.

Wasn't great by any means, but he didn't have a bad chin. He didn't necessarily lose any fights because of it. The Barkley punch would have knocked out nearly anyone and the Hagler fight was just insane and it wasn't because of Hearns' chin that he lose that one. He got battered to the body, head, everywhere and then took a huge punch right on the point which again, would have put anyone out.

A guy like Norris lost fights he shouldn't have because of his chin. Hearns didn't in my opinion.

I wouldn't compare Quarry to a Foreman or Shavers but you would agree he has power surely? Enough power certainly to KO someone chinny?
The fact that Ali could stand up to Foreman's punches was because he had an incredible chin, to say that someone who couldn't is chinny is a little harsh surely?

I loved Benitez, but I believe his defensive wizardry hid his suspect chin. He was dropped by a Sugar ray jab. bruce Curry decked him three times in his controversial loss to Benitez, and Harold Weston, who was never a great puncher, hurt Benitez several times in their two fights. In his prime, Benitez was a defensive master. After his reflexes were shot, he was ko'd three times.

You make a nice argument about Hearns, especially the 2nd fight with barkley. hearns took 12 rounds of punishment from I ran and fought a valiant fight, almost winning the fight. James Kinchen and Juan roldan had him in serious trouble and he was able to survive and win. Virgil Hill never managed to get him into serious enough trouble to make that fight in doubt, and Dennis Andries, a very decent puncher, wasn't able to floor hearns as well. So maybe Hearns' chin wasn't as fragile as people think
