Wow, they do rate him, and you can see why..
The short double hooks, and getting in close with zig zag bobbing movement were indeed what Dempsey was very good at..
The added Combination of his intense aggression & willingness to take punches, ensured there was always plenty of action, with knock downs galore..
It's easy to see why those who saw him, rated him so highly..

However, in my humble opinion, what the trainers should have asked themselves is -

Would Luis Angel Firpo or Jess Willard have made it to the 3rd KD, If the likes of Tyson, Lewis, Holyfield, Foreman or Holmes, been allowed to hit them while they were in the mid-process of trying to regain their feet?

My answer would be - NO, definitely not..

Other questions would have to include -

Why the struggles with Willie Meehan, who was beaten by many of Dempsey's victims?

Why were Willard's injuries non condusive to anything ever inflicted in a boxing ring?

Why was Dempsey KTFO in one round by Jim Flynn?

I won't ask why there's no Jeannette, Wills, Mcvey etc, as it was'nt a case of Jack ducking them, but more of an answer as to, why only 7 defenses in as many years.

In fairness, Dempsey would have probably beaten all the black fighters of his day, but the 20's was'nt exactly a talent pool, so to claim that he was the greatest with such an abundance of words, that does'nt include any mention of the above, is an unfairly biased assessment..

Nice read, but that write up seems heavily biased, in my opinion.

Mickey Malone covered pretty much everything there is to say in response to reading that article, so I don't really want to beat a dead horse here.

But I will say that the following two questions, in particular, were the ones I thought of most after reading that article.

Also ; the statement that Dempsey would easily dispatch Walcott, Marciano, Charles, and Matthews, all back to back, all in the same night, and all within 10 rounds total ; is absolutely absurd, to me.

What was Jack's record against Willie Meehan, again? Meehan ; a fighter famous for not even bothering with roadwork or any sort of training whatsoever.

Was Meehan really that good? I know that he somehow managed to beat Sam Langford, as well. But having seen nothing of this guy, would Meehan have been capable of beating the likes of Marciano, Charles, and Walcott?

Seems a bit of a stretch, to me.

Prolly not, Jess Willard was a clown in the ring with his hands held at waistline most of the time, he did have endurance to go late in a fight if his opponent wasnt a devastating puncher.

Theres always been controversy surrounding the fight, that dempsy had something illegal in his gloves, but anyways are broken jaws, busted ribs, fractured cheek bones something that hasnt happend before? I can see how Dempsy would do it with Willard being completely open to be hit esp. after he got hurt so bad...gloves were smaller then dont forget.

Dempsy supposedly was completely malnourished when he fought Flynn, or so they say, he hadnt eaten for idk how many days. Besides that Flynn was a dirty fighter, if you saw the fight he had with Johnson he was using his head, repeatedly

Yes, I do think so too and it was the first thing I thought of when I was reading it...but it was a good read from some name guys in the sport, like Ray Arcel, so I kept reading. Plus, I like Dempsey.

I've always wondered if Gene Tunney would have beatne a peak Jack Dempsey since to me, the 3 year layoff and life-style changed may have changed him...but, Gene was an incredibly gifted boxer that was one of the smartest in the games who studied Dempsey for a long time...so, maybe he always beats him...not sure.

I posted a thread of this matchup a while back...here is the article:

Nice article, probably a bit OTT on Dempsey but do think that he gets either heavily over rated or heavily under rated. Lot of respect for Arcel though and always give his opinions the respect they deserve.
