    Jose Luis Lopez

I never heard of this guy until I browsed thru Quartey's record and saw that Ike was knocked down twice in his fight with Lopez and escaped with a draw. It turns out this guy had great potential, but enjoyed the sweet life of surfing, smoking marijuana and hanging with his girlfriend too much. Ergo he never achieved the success he was predisposed for.

The guy was as hard as nails cast iron chin, and hit like a mule, and should of done alot more but was one of the most avoided fighters of the 90's after the fight with ike, whitaker, oscar, and trinidad were all scared off

That dude was an all time head slapper. Quartey was jabbing him senseless in their fight and it was a blowout for 10 rounds until in Rocky Juarez fashion he decided to start fighting and had Quartey out, and truth be told Lopez probably should have finished him. The "scoring error" or whatever it was that changed it to a draw was criminal. After the Quartey fight he had James Page reeling and on the verge of KO with virtually every combination of punches he threw in their fight, but seemed to be entirely unaware of it. Then he just disappeared.
I don't think he qualifies as a "ducked" opponent in today's boxing world though. Margarito was ducked. Not that DLH or any of the elite welters were lining up to fight Lopez, but he was high, high risk and low, low reward. Nature of the business. I'd rather see Quartey, DLH, Whitaker and Trinidad all fight each other anyway. And in most combinations they did. And Lopez didn't exactly make his case by looking like an amatuer for 10 rounds against Quartey, allowing a thouroughly beaten fighter outpoint him like Page did and then disappear from boxing altogether.

Lopez had some good talent, tough guy who could punch with pretty good skills. The guy literally quit his career to smoke pot and get high.

I really liked this fighter, he was tough and really hit hard, I don't think I would ever call him a head slapper, he punched hard and fast and accurately. The fight with Page was a letdown he should have finished him but Page still had alot left and he was throwing some monster bombs of his own after Lopez let him off the hook. When Lopez had Page in trouble in the early part of the fight, I think the 2nd round or 3rd, I think alot of Refs would have called the fight and gave Lopez the TKO victory. He definitely went after him in that round, but after that Lopez just kind of waited and waited, Lopez had more left at the end of the fight, I don't know why he didnt go for the KO. I do think Oscar and Tito were glad to not have to face him. He tested postive for Pot after fighting and "kicking the **** out of" a prime Yori Boy Campas. I don't fault Lopez too much for the Quartey fight, Quartey's awesome jab was just keeping Lopez away. Really sad to see a good talent like him throw away a succesful and lucrative fight career. He could have waited and made alot of money and then could have bought as much weed as he would ever need.

Good insight in this thread so far. Anything I have to say about Lopez has already been covered. Another 90's Welterweight with a good amount of potential who never quite lived up to it.

Lopez would have thoroughly beaten some of the recent title holders at his best. The man was a hard hitter with an even harder head.

Another note about Lopez VS Campas. Lopez Knocked Yori Boy Down in the second round "clean KD". And almost had him going again in the 5th. Yori Boy was trippin, like "who is this guy".
