What was I thinking? Bad fight predictions.

Even the most accute insight into boxing surely results in some bad picks, if not embarrassing ones. Surely everyone has at least one embarrassing pick. Confession time. And I don't mean Shane Mosely UD Winky Wright or Kelly Pavlik UD Hopkins. Some of my past highlights:

Jorge Paez UD Oscar De La Hoya- I think I let my bias overload my logic here. I don't know, man, I thought DLH hadn't been tested and Paez's speed, experience and movement would trouble him. Because I'm ******.

Robert Allen TKO 10 Bernard Hopkins- For their 2nd fight. I had convinced myself that Hopkins was old and didn't like getting roughed up and faked injury to get out of their 1st fight. Again, ******.

Trevor Berbick KO Mike Tyson- Hey, what do you want, I was 14.

Muhammad Abdullaev UD Miguel Cotto- For some reason I was so impressed by Abdullaev's destruction of Philip Holliday and Cotto's trouble with Corley it seemed like a virtual no-brainer.

    Don't leave me hangin' here.

Ricky Hatton-Manny Pacquiao (Hatton late TKO)
Nikolay Valuev-Evander Holyfield (Valuev one-sided UD)
Paul Williams-Carlos Quintana II (Quintana one-sided UD)
Jorge Linares-Oscar Larios (Larios late TKO)
Juan Manuel Lopez-Daniel Ponce De Leon (Ponce De Leon early blowout)
Miguel Cotto-Shane Mosley (Mosley mid-round KO)

This is just to name a few, in all seriousness it is safe to assume that I have made the wrong pick in every major fight for the last ten years.

Good thing about this thread is it highlights how unpredictable the game is and amuses me when I think about the modern day vs atg match ups.

We're all so sure that a prime (insert name from the past) murders prime (insert name of modern day) fighter yet struggle to predict a fight that could happen next week.

For the record I picked Spinks over Tyson and had this nagging feelin Lacy would do Jones. How's that for ******!

I thought Tyson was going to knock Lennox Lewis out.I was twelve years old and I remember all the hype for this fight and was convinced that Mike was going to beat Lennox pretty badly,my cousin to my shock said I was nuts for even thinking that would happen and I couldn't believe that he was so confident that Lewis would Destroy Tyson.

I also thought that after four years out that Vitali Klitschko would get knocked out by Sam Peter

I do wonder if Holyfield's second loss to Bowe and loss to Moorer had any positive bearing on his defeat of Tyson. It definitely had a positive bearing on the odds of the fight... Tyson was a 10:1 favorite....

It just goes to show, research should be done on the physical conditions fighters enter fights with. Holyfield had a bum shoulder and heart problems against Moorer, and Hepatitis against Bowe. I know they used to call Tyson the baddest man on the planet, but that distinction should have gone to Holyfield. The man had no pull out, quit, or mental weaknesses in him.

Anyways my worst prediction ever was Jones to decision Calzaghe. I blame it on my urge to see Hopkins vs Jones II, which luckily is going to happen anyways. Whether or not Jones won or lost to Calzaghe, I predict Hopkins would beat him.

I'd say Holyfield's performance against Bobby Czyz was a big factor as well. Just shows you that someone who has been used to fighting much bigger opponents for his whole career doesn't necessarily do better against smaller opponents, in Czyz's case a former middleweight.

Sometimes it's just difficult to switch gears like that when you're not accustomed to doing something. Even when on paper it SHOULD be an easier task.....which is why they fight in the ring and not on paper
