The films show us that.
I was just being silly about verbiage.

Not even Dempsey's jab gets called a jolt?

Did I dream "jolt" in my sleep or some such? Why doesn't anyone use this term! I'm just curious.

Think of it like this: Distances are handy reference points for a punch which has a more definite, objective range where maximum power is attained. When fighting, a punch is thrown considering where the puncher starts from and where he winds up. Punchers are front loaded... They are either coming into their target, usually with a step, or their weight is forward so it is part of their punch.

Dempsey, in his book on punching advocates stepping in with dead weight... So Dempsey was self aware of what I am describing here. Take away reference points like "outside" and "inside" and what are left with is the distance one needs to land a powerful punch. In Marquis Queensbury fighting, that distance is not attained at a distance, like long fist boxing styles, it is attained with a fighter coming into his opponent, turning explosively and following through... This is what all punchers do: Tyson, Foreman, Dempsey... Fighters that use distance and extension use it to score points, work defensively, counter an opponent... But not to throw a hard shot.

        - - I repeat, very little film on Dempsey, and most of it degraded if not mostly than in parts...

            - - 2 of the most important were the Tunney fights, terribly hacked up with a fraction of the footage filmed.

Add up all the minutes his fights lasted, and what less than 5% of Dempsey filmed footage exists on film?

Whoops, Boxing along with Hollywood being such a miserable sport and miserable business that they cannot protect their own heritage to boxing much less to the first full length feature films of any note

Queeny, there are several mnutes of Demspey vs. multiple oppoents. I think that is enough to go on. Most of Dempsey's fights were not filmed.

It would be an issue if there were no film of his opponents. But we've got that to go on as well as film of Dempsey.
