Favorite Play-By-Play Announcers And Color Men

I like a lot of them. And don't forget which broadcasting teams you prefer too. For color, I like Bobby Czyz and George Foreman, but Manny Steward best. Poor old Lennox Lewis was pretty mediocre at the job. I noticed the voice of Lennox sounds almost identical to Andre Ward's on the job, who is a much better analyst.

For play-by-play Lampley wasn't that good because he didn't know what he was talking about and saw things that did not happen, though he was pleasant enough. Dunphy was, of course, peerless. Marv Albert very good, especially in tandem with Czyz. Who did I leave out? In the old days I liked Cosell.

The HBO team of Lampley, Merchant, various ex boxer, and Harold Ledderman on the scorecard may have had their *****, but they were fun and are etched into my brain. They remind me of watching all the great fights of my youth. Plus, I love Jay Mohr's bit mocking Merchant during Foreman v Moorer is classic.

Lennox has gotten better, but was atrocious when he started. Of all the current teams, I'll take Showtime's.

Tommy Hearns tried it one night. It was a horror show.

      What about Al Bernstein?

I am not sure how to rate him because back in the 80s he got hooked up with the cable networks and was all about.

The period between 1980 and 1990 was a second golden age of television boxing; early cable TV brought us fights from Waco and out of Mexicali.

HBO and Showtime gave us many big ones free.

Two, sometimes three channels, each week having fight cards.

Bernstein became ubiquitous to the whole show. He seemed to be everywhere. I heard him so often it didn't matter if he was good or not, he was the guy.

I did not care for Dave Bendtempo much.

But regardless cable TV was full of fights.

I like Larry Merchant, Don Dunphy and Manny Stewart too. Lampley could be a bit much. Also liked Barry Tompkins a lot on older fights I watched on DVD. So I thought it was cool when they used him in Rocky 4.

Bernstein had a bit of a whiny voice until he got older, ,but I thought he always knew what he was looking at.

Dunphy, Manny Stewart, Gil Clancy, Al Bernstein, Sean O'Grady, Raul Marquez, and for entertainment value I used to like Scott Ledoux. Lampley was good but for the last few years he was too biased. Calling phantom punches for the house fighter while barely mentioning the opponent's performance.
