    Hemingway Evaluates Joe Louis in1935

Ernest Hemingway the great novelist and life long boxing fan,had this to say about Joe Louis' chances against three previous greats in1935.
" Louis is too good to be true, and he is absolutely true.
In comparison with past fighters I have seen,I believe he would beat Dempsey on the best day Dempsey ever saw,he punches faster, and he has a perfect defence against a hooker, and Dempsey was the greatest of the hookers, and never anything else.
Langford was much too easy to hit to ever beat Louis.
Johnson ,at his best would outbox Louis as he is today, and I believe ,beat him on points
Nobody hit Jack solidly for 12 years.
Louis is a much more perfect fighting machine, but Johnson was a size larger and the greatest and strongest boxer ,probably that ever lived.
Right now I believe,Tunney at his peak would have the best style to beat Louis.Tunney had the perfect left hand,a complete defence against a right or left hook, and a beautiful right counter that traveled along the shortest distance between two points."

        - - Great, but what do you say, or are you just a meme?

Prime Louis vs Dempsey the best fantasy fight ever. Always favored Dempsey but fact is it's 50/50 needing a trilogy.

Langford had tricks Louis had never seen, and hard to fight because he was so short, another 50/50.

JJohnson wouldn't fight Joe Louis, period...Duh!!!

If they did, JJ stinks so bad he asphyxiates the arena and they have to evacuate.

Tunney is overrated for catching a rusty Dempsey. He looks good vs Joe, but over 15 and not the strange 10 rounders vs Dempsey, Joe reels him in.

The point was I think the forum would rather know Hemingway's opinion than mine, but, since you have asked.
Dempsey takes out Louis inside 3 rounds.
          Johnson outpoints him.
Tunney has a 40 % chance of pulling an upset.
What tricks do you think Langford had that Louis never saw?
Langford's kryptonite was good jabbers.Louis was one of the best.

Got a question regarding your Dempsey opinion.

I'll be a bit of a hypocrite here because I usually bad mouth fantasy fights. But this one has only a small stretch.

How does 1920 Dempsey match up against 1926 Tunney?

I want to believe it's Dempsey by KO, but I recognize my own bias. Wondering how you feel.

Based on their second fight, when Dempsey had shaken off some of the ring rust against Sharkey , I think Jack would get to Tunney over 15rds put him down and keep him there.

                - - Told you JJohnson won't fight Louis.

Wills, Jeannette, Langford, Jeffries would, but not even some made up fantasy is ever gonna make JJohnson fight Louis or anyone he could beat by when champ, the reason he ducked Langford and Jeannette in Paree.

Blind Langford KOed prime Wills, so prime Langford could KO Louis, the reason I rate this a 50/50 fight. JJohnson avoided prime Langford like the plague.

You asked me for my picks in those fights,I gave them.I've humored a fool ,now go away and let the grown ups talk boxing.
For the record I have absolutely no interest in your opinions on these matches ,or on anything else.
I posted the thread because I thought it might interest some serious members of the forum.

Hemingway thought Jack Johnson was the greatest and strongest boxer that ever lived (up to his day.) That’s quite a compliment.
