    Charley Burley footag

    - - Claimed Charly Burley footage. The only footage I seen of him is Oakland Billy Smith clip where both are hard to distinguish in what looks like a boring fight.

This is better, but just a few clips against a bigger, unknown opponent with a lot of boxing expert genuflecting(cough, cough, gag)

Was Burley ducked, or did he dig his own grave?

I think a little of both. His spoiler style, not giving the fans the gore they crave, certainly made him easier to take a pass on. For fans, promoters, press writers, managers, fighters.....everyone.

The referee once stopped a fight between Burley and Holman Williams for lack of action, and sent them both to the showers. Why would Robinson want to fight that?

Its from the same fight Queenie... What is great is that we have this footage... We have a sense of how great Burley actually was. he was an incredible fighter and even just watching him against one fighter one can see how great he was. I saw this presentation before, the guy did a great job analyzing Burley. Great catch, this happens to be one of my favorite boxing presentations

Here is a color filmed version of the fight: A lot clearer and one can see some of what Burley is doing! Scary good!

Burley had a throwback boxing stance and was very defensive. A counter puncher who was very economical with his punches. Content to win on points. This was the age of television taking over the small boxing clubs. They needed fan friendly fighters to show on TV, and Charley wasn’t it. Even if Robinson could beat him, he wouldn’t look good doing it.

Burley is haphephobic. He hates human contact, unless it is at the end of his fists. He is a pinnacle example of "Punch and get out." He wants his perfect range at all moments, and manages to stay there far more than most boxers. He backs up a lot seeking that perfect range from which he can leap forward and throw a few punches. Sometimes he just draws back, like they tell you not to. He likes to suddenly leap forward in that situation. He does quite a bit of leaping forward and quickly retreating out of range. He will not leap past his opponent and open himself up for the check hook though. And he is not throwing many of those himself because Billy will not cooperate, being just leery enough. If the opponent gets too close, Charley clinches so the ref will intervene and they can reset again.

He has speed--well, he seems to have everything, a full medicine pouch. Not sure where his power is. His punches are not having much affect on this opponent, but some of them look pretty hard.

yeah losing without getting hurt back then wasn't considered a fight. and shouldn't be. if you didn't have the power to knock someone out cold, at least shut their eyes and beat them up and maybe stop them. If you can't even do that then don't box, you can't fight lol. and yes willie pep beat guys up, and tried to stop them.

walking away with a decision having never even hurt your opponent means you didn't try, and shouldn't be awarded. If you plan on staying away all night and landing grazing shots, then your opponent shouldn't be obligated to pressure you and make a fight either.

All these guys fought each other so often they probably became friends.

some if that dudes videos are good, but he misses the mark sometimes. He showed us Durans delayed right hand trap though, was pretty good obvservation.

Burley from what I heard was the man in the gym. We don’t even know what type of person he was let alone seen much footage. He does use some clever moves though and fights in a very ring generalship style. Aka the other dude is basically reacting to him not the other way around
