What is amzaing about Qawi, he never started boxing until the late age of 25and when released from Jail he turned Pro with no amature expirence at all.
He first went to Joe Frazier Gym in Philadelphia, and trained there for his first few fights. While there he sparred former world title challager tough as they come Bennie Briscoe. And him and Briscoe had a all out war. This is a amazing story as Qawi had only been boxing a few months.
In Qawi first 3 pro bouts he was 1-1-1. Some boxers may have called it a day, but not Qawi he carried on.And it paid off, Qawi defeated his next 14 opponets some of the names included Theunis Kok 8-0-0, Johnny Wilburn 15-5-0, Mike Rossman 40-6-3, and James Scott 19-1-1.
Before finally after only 3 years in the sport Qawi got a title shot at age 28 against the the number #1 LHW exciting bralwer Matthew Saad Muhammad who had made 9 defences of his WBC Light Heavyweight Title. Qwi overwhelmed Muhhamed on the way to stopping him in 10 rounds to win his first World Title.
After this remarkable achievement Qawi would make 3 defences of his WBC Title, stopping all 3 of them inside the distnace wins included Jerry Martin, Eddie Davis and again Matthew Saad Muhammad.
And then finally on March 18 1983 Qawi would meet then WBA Ordinary World light heavyweight champion Michael Spinks to unify the titles in what was called the ''Brawl For It All''
Qawi would lose a 15 Round Decision, and said afterwards he wasn't well and this contributed to his performance. After Qawi felt that making the division's 175-pound weight limit had drained him physically, thsi brought a move up to the Jr Heavyweight Division (Cruiserweight).
Qawi won his first 7 fights as a Jr Heavyweight, and in these wins he would win the WBA Title and making one defence wins included Piet Crous, and former World Heavyweight Champion Leon Spinks. And then it was is considered one of the best fights of all time he and 12-0 Evander Holyfeild sqaured off for Qawi WBA Title.
From start to finish this epic battle was a complete WAR, and both men traded heavy leather it a must see fight.
Holyfield would come away with a razor sharp SD 15, some thought Qawi deserved it, but Holyfield came away with the victory
After this things would slide for Qawi, he would have a few decent wins, but was stopped in 4 in the remtach by Holyfield. After the Holyfield defeat,Qawi eating habbits moved him up to Heavyweight to get stopped by the comebacking George Foreman, Qawi tired out and Big George was just to big and Strong for him.
After this, Qawi moved back down to Jr Heavyweight, he would carry on to get title shots but fail in each attempt. And would carry to lose and have some medicore wins. He would retire in 1992, and kept reitred for 6 years before making a ill advised comeback he was in his late 40's.
On his comeback he won 2 lost 1, but was old and slow.
His last fight came in November of 98, he was beaten by Tony LaRosa at heavyweight LaRosa was 30-13. After this Qawi knew it was time to call it a day and he did.
.Qawi has had drug battles in the past as well as big eating habits.
Qawi's Style
He was a extremely powerfull, hard hitting light heavyweight, and was also a deceptively clever boxer with a solid chin. He would work his way in behind his high guard, slipping punchers and then ****ing with those strong arms, particulary his left hook. He would also crouch very low to avoid punchers.
Qawi was ****** thus the name change early on in his career. After retirement he would go on to be a trainer, he dosen't really watch boxing no more as he says not enough fighters fight no more. After seeing De La Hoya/Mayweather
