    Oscar Bonevena vs Rocky Marciano

Well since the fantasy fights forum had turned into a joke lately, i figure i post my fantasy match ups in the history section from now on. On topic, Bonevena is someone i am more sold on than Marciano. I think Rocky is one of the great fighters of all time and certainly a top 10-15ish great, but i feel Oscar just had more and fought the bigger more skillful opponents and did well. I actually had him beating Frazier in their first fight. I also feel hes one of the most underrated fighters of any time.

    1. Do you think Oscar would go through Marciano's record unbeaten?

    2. Who would you pick to win?
( think hard first, this match up is a lot better than what it looks like on paper)

I think Oscar was the bigger puncher to be honest. Can rocky Take it? hard to say.

That's very possible. I know Rocky could punch, but i don't think he had the kind of power that some people make it out to be. I remember the thudding hooks Oscar landed against Frazier, had him shaken almost every time and Frazier's chin was great. I also read that Oscar broke Ali's nose and two of his ribs.

He could possibly get thru Marciano's record undefeated. Would he? Im not so sure.

I would give both Walcott (from the first Rocky fight) and Ezzard Charles a good shot at beating Bonovena. Both were slick, cagey fighter who I think would beat Ringo to the punch most of the night. with all due respect my friend, I've never been as sold on Oscar as you, but he was a pretty good fighter.

I see what you mean, however its really hard to judge them since Oscar fought in a far better division against fighters that were bigger and skillful at the same time. Lets look at it like this. In your opinion, could Rocky perform as well as Oscar did against Frazier or Ali? Oscar was naturally bigger than Rocky, he could match him in the power department and he was definitely more skilled and was no stranger to fighting in close for 15 rounds.

He could have gone through Marciano's record undefeated but I don't think he would have, I think Walcott in his first fight with Marciano would have had a very good shot at beating Bonavena, same for Charles in his first fight with Marciano.

As for a fight between Marciano and Bonavena, I think it would have gone something like the second Frazier-Bonavena fight, except more competitive, especially early on in the fight but I think Marciano's smothering attack and body shots would push Bonavena back and win the fight for Marciano. Marciano by decision.

I don't think he has much of a chance of going through Marciano's record undefeated but he does have a chance of beating Rocky.

I think he fought in a better era, but did he really beat better fighters? If he fough in the late 40's to mid 50's he would have been a top fighter, but he would have run into the same problem he did in his own era (against less fighters of coure) because of his limitations.

as far as your question on how Rocky would do against Ali and Frazier in comparison to Bonavena? I think Rocky applies better pressure than Ringo did and is a bit faster. I don't think he can beat Ali, but I've always given him a fair shot at Frazier.

PS- I was going to PM you last night and send you an article about Bonavena that I had saved, but when I clicked it it said the page was no longer available. Had you ever read anything about Oscar called "A killing at the Mustang"? Interesting stuff about Ringo and his death. Being a fan I think you would have liked it.

Bonavena was not really a traditional pressure fighter in my opinion.

He had his most success backing up and fighting off the ropes against Frazier and Chuvalo. You could make the case that he was the only man to knock Chuvalo down although it wasn't called (it was both a punch and a push, Chuvalo however was noticeably hurt).

Good points, although i rate Bonvena's skill just a bit higher. He could box on the outside when he needed to( of course against limited outside boxers though) and as seen in his fights with Frazier, Folley, and Ali, he was a great inside fighter. The one person that would scare me on Marciano's record would be Walcott against Oscar, because of his movement and power. That's a match up i have to look deeper into.

Sounds cool, is there another article similar to that anywhere? I'm not sure if its the same one but i remember in my other thread about Bonevena, Terry posted a story about how he died, and i book marked it.
