I would have to pick Duran because he was relentless. He had better speed than Chavez, had a great chin and could hit like a freight train.

It would probably be a very close fight because I do think Chavez was the better boxer, especially inside.

It would be a brawl no doubt because both could take a hell of a punch. It would be closer than some think but overall it's hard not to pick Duran.

Duran by SD in a blood bath and gruesome fight from two guys that don't back down.

I have to go with Duran. Chavez is a great fighter no doubt, but he is at the lower end of the great scale at Lightweight. Duran, on the other hand, in my opinion and that of more than a few experts was the greatest Lightweight EVER.

Chavez could punch, not quite one punch power, but still numbing and debilitating. He had a concrete chin and his bodywork ranks with the best I've seen. He was easy to hit but his chin absorbed everything thrown at him (ask Edwin Rosario). No boxer, came straight ahead looking to deliver pain to the ribs before going upstairs for the KO.

Duran was a very versatile fighter who could box or brawl as the situation required. "Manos Di Piedros" wasn't just a name. Ask anyone who experienced Duran's punches and they'll tell you exactly what that means.
Duran was underated defensively. His defense was subtle and not readly seen on TV or by the average spectator. A slight shift in his head to slip a punch, a subtle shoulder movement to roll with a punch, all the while he's right there in his opponents face. His chin was certainly solid at Lightweight, it was only after moving up to Welterweight and eating Thomas Hearns' right hands that his chin failed him. The smoldering coal black eyes told of an intensity, a fire within that in the ring made him a man bent on homicide.

The result? Duran by unanimous decision. Roberto had to many skills, was too versatile, and too intense for Chavez to overcome. Chavez took punishment too well to get KOed. Chavez would have his moments too, especially in close to the body, and make a respectable showing of it. Duran wins solidly, but not easily on the cards. This fight is no blowout.

Chavez a better inside fighter and a better boxer than Duran?....!!!???

                  Why do you think that?

I think it would be a close fight that was also not very close. Confused? It would look close with all the infighting and constant pressure but looking closely you would see Duran winning most exchanges with more versatile inside and outside fighting and being much defensively than Chavez could dream of being. Duran UD.

Chavez tech win 9 over Duran after Chavez convinces the ringside doctor he can't continue because Duran has something in his gloves. The doctor, after seeing how busted up Chavez face is, agrees that no one can be hitting that hard without doing something illegal.

                    seriously though ~~

Duran lands with astonishing accuracy and even floors Chavez in the 6th (hands of stone wasn't just a cool nickname for Duran). Chavez has a few moments of his own but never stuns or hurts Duran and can't do anything to get Duran's respect enough to keep him off. The brutality of Duran comes full circle in the 9th when he catches Chavez coming forward then pushes him into a corner. Duran tee's off and with Chavez refusing to go down the referee stops the fight. TKO for Duran.
