    All Time Middleweight Rankings (1-10)

    1.Sugar Ray Robinson
    2.Harry Greb
    3.Stanley Ketchel
    4.Carlos Monzon
    5.Mickey Walker
    6.Charley Burley
    7.Bob Fitzsimmons
    8.Jake LaMotta
    9.Marvin Hagler
    10.Tony Zale

I present to you my all-time middleweight rankings. I'm abit more happy with these than I am my LH rankings considering I still need to do some work on them. But that being said all rankings are a constant work in progress.

Before anyone askes, Roy Jones is #12, right behind Marcel Cerdan.

    Opinions?

I may or may not be older than you (I am 40)...you could be a boxing historian for all I know, but to have Hagler at number 9 is perplexing to say the least. He could have been champion sooner than he actually was for some obvious reasons, and really the decision, albeit a loss, to Leonard is a bit questionable. Too bad he Monzon could not share a ring but nevermind.

Marvin soundly beat alot of good and great fighters to say the very least. Fighters with very respectable ring records indeed. The man was never officially down in his entire career amateur or profeesional.

He was the COMPLETE 160 lb package and I think most people will agree he is in the top 3 at least.

SRR had alot of losses at middleweight...too many for my liking. He will always be more welter to me.

Also B-Hop is worth at least top 10...maybe 8th?

You guys are on the money..at any rate I copy pasted one of my working lists and not the finished one I had further down the Word page. Once again multi-tasking in the office bites me.

Here is the original list I posted -

          1.Sugar Ray Robinson
          2.Harry Greb
          3.Stanley Ketchel
          4.Carlos Monzon
          5.Mickey Walker
          6.Charley Burley
          7.Bob Fitzsimmons
          8.Jake LaMotta
          9.Marvin Hagler
          10.Tony Zale

But here is the revised list I had meant to post.

          1.Sugar Ray Robinson
          2.Harry Greb
          3.Stanley Ketchel
          4.Carlos Monzon
          5.Marvin Hagler
          6.Charley Burley
          7.Mickey Walker
          8.Jake LaMotta
          9.Bob Fitzsimmons
          10.Tony Zale

And if you must know, I take who I think are the 15-20 best fighters at any weight division and just start working it down. And I make dozens of lists before I have one I'm happy with, and even then when I get to the bottom I'm still not satisfied.

hagler is number 1 for me, hagler beats robinson at middleweight. although I have jones jr beating everyone at middleweight when he was at middleweight, I wont rank him because he was a lhw most of his career.

RJJ was naturally bigger than Hagler, hence his move up. But as far as all time great Middleweights go, he was not in the division long enough, and I am not sure if he was the lineal champion.

Tough one to call if they did fight...I would lean to Hagler maybe because I am biased!

When I look at an all time top ten for a weight class, I like to rate by lineal champs, quality of opposion and longevity....I would also have the fighter to at least have 75% of his career at that weight...

I don't think there is anyway you can rate RJJ or Hagler the #1 middleweight. What truly elite fighters did RJJ beat? He was great at middleweight but what truly elite fighters did he defeat at middle? James Toney? You can't crack the top 10 with that alone.

True he beat Hopkins but beating Hopkins at the time period isn't as much of an accomplishment as it would have been later when the fight was talked about. As for Hagler he gets the nod for longevity and sustained excellence but he lacks the pedigree of Sugar Ray Robinson. What true greats did Hagler defeat at middleweight to warrant a #1 placement? Duran and Hearns, plus a list of good contenders? I don't think that make the cut for #1.

As for Hopkins he too gets high marks for sustained excellence, but he has never beaten anyone considered great - other than a couple of blown up welterweights - to warrant placement in the top 10.

As for the ********* of the list, I just wanted to place it in the thread and not edit the original post so you could see my screwup and realize I'm not trying to hide my mistakes
