    Michael Nunn - Where does he rate?

    My favourite fighter of modern times. I just loved the way he boxed he made it look so easy. Yes he was an arrogant sod with a ****** smirk on his face but I couldn't help but love his style.

    I'd like to know what other people thought and could they answer the questions below. He's my favourite fighter as I said and probably can't help but be just a little biased.

    For those that haven't seen him here is a short clip.



    Where does he rate in the all-time middleweight rankings?

    How would he have fared against the other champions?

    Could he have been better and achieved a lot more?

    Natural ability wise was there many any better?

    I rate him one of the best.

    James Toney becamse popular after beating him.

    JT tricked him because He was concenrating on the right hand but Tony hit him with the left hook. Nunn was winning the fight

      Michael "Second To" Nunn, was great (helluva nickname too) and I really liked him. Alot of people said he had a soft punching, unexciting style but I don't agree. He was a great technician who had better power than given credit for.

      Anyone remember that KO of Sumbu Kalambay??? He beat some very good/great fighters in his prime - Frank Tate, Marlon Starling, Donald Curry, Iran Barkley & Juan Domingo Roldan - and he beat them all in what? A span of about 2 years? Most guys take a career to beat a list of guys like that. His lone prime loss being to James Toney.

      I loved his style..reminds me kind of Winky Wright. It's a shame whats happened to him because I think he totally got screwed with his prison sentence but thats another story.

      As for rating him I'm not sure...thats another division that has a few elite guys at the top and the rest is a log jam. I think if pressed I could put him in the top 20 but can't truthfully answer until I really think about it.

      One things for sure I always liked him as a fighter and never thought he got the credit he deserved.

        He got lazy and sloppy and paid the price big time. He never was the same fighter afterwards and never came into the ring in decent shape after the Toney fight. At times he made Toney look like a complete novice.

        He should never have left the Goosens as good as Dundee was he never knew him and how to get him motivated like Goosen.

        I think he had the talent but not the discipline to be one of the all time greats and at his best could have been a match for most.

        He beat some really good fighters before running into Toney.

        Frank Tate in 9the olympic gold medalist when winning the title.
        Juan Roldan in 8 a tough decent fighter but not great
        Sumbu Kalambay WBA Champion in 1 and had never been stopped in 50 fights
        Iran Barkley in a lacklustre close decision
        Marlon Starling in another lacklustre decision
        Donald Curry stopped in 10

        Even in some of these fights he seemed lazy and uninterested.
        I just wonder what a fully fit motivated Michael Nunn could of achieved.

          Nice clip, Ring ****zine's KO of the year in 1989 against a guy 46-3. Nunn only had one loss at middleweight, against an undefeated James Toney. Unfortunately that was after only 5 succesful title defences, so he comes up short on the GOAT middleweight list. But his height at 6'3", his speed, movement, and his very under-rated power would have made him a difficult opponent for any middleweight in history.

              nunn was really something special, james toney became famous overnight, and fighter of the year just for knocking him out. it was a really special night though, for james, he was really being schooled by nunn and only won the last couple rounds before the KTFO. i'm a lot older than most of u guys, i was still a teenager when the fight happened, i remember how much news that fight got. nobody cared about middleweights, or boxing then, it was the beginning of the way it is now, but even here in canada, the music video channnel even interrupted it's normal programming to say that james toney shocked the world by knocking michael nunn the **** out and becoming iBF champion of the world.

                  Based on what little I know about him (including the video clip), I'm not as impressed as you are. He seemed to be a fairly good fighter, however.

                  To answer your questions...
                  • Certainly not in the top 10.
                  • I assume he was a champion in his division at one time or another. As to how he would have fared against other champions, I guess that would depend on the champion in question.
                  • There's always room for improvement, no different in his case. Had he been better, I might have been more acquainted with his legacy.
                  • In the middleweight division, at least 10 (see first answer).

                    - -Agree with most all, but sadly his nose candy era robbed him of his talent and record.
