Monzon & Hagler

Got this idea from someone else. Let's say Hagler fought in Monzon's era and Monzon fought in Hagler's.....who does better, who does worse, what do you see happening?

No. What I mean is if Hagler fought in the 60's and 70's against Monzon's opposistion, how would he do...and vice versa?


...but yeah Hagler vs Monzon would be an instant classic, IMO.

I would also pick Hagler, as he hit a little harder and went up against a little better competition, PLUS he was a SOUTHPAW!

Off the top of my head, I don't see either fighter doing all that much better or worse than the other had they switched up eras, although I do think I'd favour a prime Valdez that Monzon fought (Valdez slipped quite noticably after the rematch...a different/depleted version of himself defeated Briscoe in their third meeting) over a version of Hagler that would've been on the tail end of his career...It might've been close, though, and very likely it turns out to be a friggin WAR.

Hagler would be too strong for the Monzon opponents, BUT Monzon would have some problems with some of Hagler's. I think Hagler would have done a little better.

Really? Cause I'd think Griffin, Briscoe, Valdez, and Napoles would give Hagler some trouble.

And Monzon was bigger than all of Hagler's opponents except Hearns.

He was reasonably strong at middleweight, but physical strength isn't something that first comes to mind when associating Marvin Hagler's qualities as a fighter...

He wasn't a big middleweight by any means, and I do recall portions of the first Antuofermo fight when Vito outmuscled Hagler in the trenches during the last half of the fight and pushed him back. Ditto for the Juan Roldan fight when Roldan outmuscled Hagler at times, as did Hamsho for some of their first fight. In fact, I've never seen the fight, but I've read in Ring ****zine that Willie Monroe also had success in outmuscling Hagler in their first fight.

P.S. Monzon is physically stronger than is/was Hagler, in my opinion.

To be honest with you, when Griffith fought Monzon, he was well past his prime. Brisco had trouble with boxers such as Luis Rodriguez, Valdez, Griffith and he did loss to Hagler near the end of his career. Napoles, would be over powered by Hagler, as he was only a Welterweight. As far as Valdez goes, I can see him giving Hagler problems, but I just think Hagler was to good of a puncher and boxer for him, BUT of all Monzon's opponents, I believe Valdez would have given him the best bout.
