Manager Frank Espinoza finds himself extremely busy as usual. He has Yonnhy Perez and Abner Mares involved in Showtime’s highly regarded Bantamweight tournament scheduled for December 11th. He also manages the careers of undefeated prospects like Carlos Molina, Antonio “Relentless” Orozco, Abraham Lopez, Ronny Rios and Luis Ramos. These hot up and comers require a lot of time and attention.
It’s because of this attention that Espinoza Boxing fighters have amassed an impressive 85 wins with only 5 losses. All since 2007.
We caught up with Mr. Espinoza and he answered a few questions for us:
Q. We’ve recently read reports that Israel Vazquez has retired. How do you feel about his retirement given that you managed him for more than a decade?
A. Israel will soon be making an official announcement regarding his future. It’s something that he will personally address so I can’t comment at this time.
You have two fighters, Yonnhy Perez and Abner Mares, in the Showtime tournament. Is it difficult to manage two fighters that will be facing each other at some point? How does that affect you?
This is a business and I’ve learned to separate my personal feelings when it comes to these types of situations. When Abner and Yonnhy face off, I’ll remain neutral. I hope the best for both guys. They are truly special fighters.
What did you think when you first heard of the bantamweight tournament?
It was exciting news but not a surprise coming from Showtime sports and Ken Hershman who’s always been a visionary. Showtime is setting the bar very high when it comes to boxing.
Can you update us on some of your fighters? What’s next for them?
I have Carlos Molina and Antonio Orozco fighting November 18 at the Nokia Club in Los Angeles on a Golden Boy Promotion’s show. And then we have the big event on December 11. Abner Mares vs. Vic Darchinyan and Yonnhy Perez vs. Joseph Agbeko in Leon, Mexico.
Will you be signing any new fighters in the future? Can we expect an announcement?
I can’t confirm or deny any signings at this point but I’ve definitely got something in the works. I’ll be making some big announcements in the near future.
What can the fans expect from the Espinoza Boxing Club in the near future?
We’re going to keep going strong and moving forward. December 11 on Showtime you’ll see two of our fighters at their best. Abner Mares and Yonnhy Perez are two of the most exciting and talented bantamweights that have ever put on a pair of boxing gloves. I hope everyone tunes in to see them win.
