DALLAS – Errol Spence Jr. weighed slightly less Friday afternoon than he did the day before he fought Shawn Porter 14 months ago.
The unbeaten IBF and WBC welterweight champion had a lot less trouble getting down to the welterweight limit, though, for his fight against Danny Garcia on Saturday night. Spence, who officially weighed 146.4 pounds at the Renaissance Dallas hotel, entered his nine-week training camp in “the low 160s,” as opposed to beginning camp for the Porter fight at nearly 190 pounds.
Garcia stepped on the Texas Combative Sports Program’s scale at 146.8 pounds.
Spence (26-0, 21 KOs), of DeSoto, Texas, is consistently listed as approximately a 4-1 favorite against Garcia (36-2, 21 KOs), a former welterweight and junior welterweight champ from Philadelphia, in their 12-round fight for Spence’s two 147-pound championships. Spence will fight for the first time since suffering cuts to his face and body and damaged teeth in a one-car accident in October 2019.
Spence, 30, and Garcia, 32, were on track to box late in January before the injuries Spence sustained in that accident and later the COVID-19 pandemic delayed their fight for 10 months.
Spence-Garcia will headline a four-fight FOX Sports Pay-Per-View show from the Dallas Cowboys’ AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas ($74.99). The official weights for the Spence-Garcia undercard are listed below.
