Errol Spence Jr. and Danny Garcia confirmed Friday afternoon that their welterweight title fight is set for November 21.
Spence issued a Tweet that revealed the date of their 12-round fight for the unbeaten champion’s IBF and WBC 147-pound titles. The site for their main event is not set because it is unknown if fans will be able to attend sporting events in the United States by November 21 due to COVID-19 restrictions.
“Done deal the King of the division BACK,” Spence wrote in his Tweet. “Nov. 21st on Fox PPV vs @DannySwift.”
Spence added the hashtags #Mandown and #strapseason to his message.
Garcia responded with a Tweet that reads, “HERE WE GO! @ErrolSpenceJr. Spence on Nov. 21. Signed! Sealed! Delivered! My 10th world title fight [it’s] time to crown the king again.”
The Spence-Garcia pay-per-view event will be officially announced August 8 during FOX’s first boxing broadcast in five months. Thomas Dulorme (25-3-1, 16 KOs) and Jamal James (26-1, 12 KOs) will fight for the WBA interim welterweight title in the 12-round main event that night at Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.
The Athletic’s Mike Coppinger first reported that Spence-Garcia tentatively was going to take place at some point in November.
For Spence (26-0, 21 KOs), facing Garcia will represent his return from a horrific car accident October 10 in Dallas.
The powerful southpaw from DeSoto, Texas, insisted on boxing a top opponent in his first fight following that one-car crash, in which Spence suffered damaged teeth and cuts to his face and body. Spence, 30, was charged with a misdemeanor count of driving while intoxicated as a result of that accident.
The 2012 U.S. Olympian returned to training several months ago, but Spence will end more than a one-year layoff against Garcia (36-2, 21 KOs), a former WBC welterweight champ. Spence last fought September 28, when he dropped Shawn Porter (30-3-1, 17 KOs) in the 11th round and won a 12-round split decision in their welterweight title unification fight at Staples Center in Los Angeles.
Garcia, 32, was supposed to face Spence on January 25, but Spence’s injuries temporarily halted his career. Philadelphia’s Garcia instead defeated Ukraine’s Ivan Redkach (23-5-1, 18 KOs, 1 NC) by unanimous decision in their 12-rounder January 25 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
