The year of the spoiler continues.
Dennis Contreras once again upset the apple cart, snatching the “O” from the glossy record of Carlos Flores in a 6th round knockout victory Friday evening at Osceola Heritage Park in Kissimmee, Florida.
A two-punch combo, punctuated by a right hand, left Flores on the canvas and unable to continue as he was counted out 0:35 into the 6th round of the Boxeo Telemundo fall season premiere.
Contreras hoped to recreate the same magic he enjoyed six weeks ago in this very venue. The veteran spoiler from Guadalajara immediately closed the gap and took the fight to his unbeaten countryman eight years his junior, forcing an inside fight and at a grueling pace. Flores weathered the storm well, remaining composed in his first true step up in competition.
Flores turned the tide in a big way in round three, letting his hands go at the start of the round and forcing Contreras to back up for the first time in the fight. Contreras regained his composure, riding out the brief storm and resuming control of the action although Flores was landing the cleaner shots from the outside.
A similar pattern held true in round four, with Flores shooting his jab and moving around the ring while Contreras continued to fight in a straight line. Contreras was effective in cutting off the ring, though struggling to put together his combinations once on the inside.
Both boxers enjoyed key moments in an entertaining round five. Flores connected with a combination upstairs, appearing to have rocked Contreras. It proved to be fool’s gold, as Contreras immediately responded with a right hand upstairs which left Flores stunned along the ropes. The onslaught continued through the final 0:45 of the round, as Contreras poured on his attack complete with a right hand which snapped back the head of Flores who managed to remain upright.
At least through five rounds.
That dynamic changed in a big way in round six. Contreras carried momentum over into the round and never looked back. The 28-year old slugger stalked Flores in searching for that perfect opening. It came in the form of a left hook, right hand combination which put Flores down face first on the canvas. The Tijuana native did his best to peel himself off the deck but was ultimately counted out.
Flores suffers his first career defeat, falling to 20-1 (11KOs). The setback also spoiled his United States debut, having spent the entirety of his career in Mexico.
Meanwhile, Contreras has now reached a point where wins grow tougher in being classified as upsets. The victory is his third straight in improving to 23-10-1 (21KOs). Two of the wins in that stretch have come versus unbeaten opposition, outpointing previously undefeated Fernando Garcia last May in his own U.S. debut in Biloxi, Mississippi.
Contreras resurfaced earlier this summer, arriving in Kissimmee to take on Colombia’s Belmar Preciado at this location. The two waged war, with Contreras the better equipped of the two as he dropped and stopped Preciado in the 5th round of their August 28 Telemundo headliner.
