IBF super middleweight champion James DeGale has fired back at some of the recent statements being made by Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Last Saturday night at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York - DeGale fought WBC champion Badou Jack to a twelve round majority draw. The contest was very physical with a lot of fireworks. Jack was down in the first round and DeGale was down in the twelfth.
After the fight was over, Mayweather - who promotes Jack - was fired up over the outcome and claimed the decision was a clear "robbery" while being interviewed by Showtime's Jim Grey. Mayweather even threatened the possibility of never coming back to promote a fight in New York.
DeGale felt Mayweather was disrespectful and used the post fight press conference as an outlet to keep the spotlight on himself instead of the actual fighters. In a weird twist, Mayweather was also pressing for DeGale to join his promotional company.
"100 percent, it's all about Floyd. He's got a big ego, and he loves the limelight. He chats rubbish, don't listen to a word he says. He said he needs to stick with his fighter. Badou Jack probably thinks he's crazy. It's the Floyd Mayweather show," DeGale said to Sky Sports.
DeGale's promoter, Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Sport, was also very surprised with Mayweather's post fight statements regarding the fight.
"I got some flak - they said I should jumped over the top of him! It's a difficult one because you have to give him respect, because he is Floyd Mayweather, but at the same time he does talk some rubbish sometimes. To say the fight was a robbery; he should know better. It's hard to criticise him because of what he's achieved. I thought it was unfair to DeGale," Hearn said.
