Having aggregated an amateur record consisting of 130 wins against only two losses, David Morrell found it necessary to accelerate his pro career. Just one year following his debut, the Cuban star snagged the interim WBA super middleweight crown. Shortly after, the WBA’s proliferation of world titles would continue as the 24-year-old was elevated to “Regular” champion.
In the second defense of his secondary trinket against Kalvin Henderson earlier this year, Morrell (7-0, 6 KOs) dissected the porous defense of his man, registering the fourth-round stoppage win. As the former amateur standout continues to move into the pugilistic spotlight, David Benavidez, a former two-time super middleweight belt holder, has urged Morrell to take him on.
In addition to Benavidez, Morrell concedes that most of the boxing world, including himself, is anxious to watch them share the ring. However, in any event, Morrell admits that no matter how badly he would like to get his hands on Benavidez, he may have to play the waiting game.
“Everybody wants me and Benavidez,” said Morrell during an interview with Young Billionaire Boxing. “I want Benavidez but it’s not depending on me, it depends on my team.”
Ostensibly determined to recapture championship glory, Benavidez (26-0, 23 KOs) has plowed through his recent competition. After working his way back into title contention, Benavidez made quick work of David Lemieux during their May showdown.
The patient 25-year-old stalked the Canadian native before quickly finding his rhythm. The results, unsurprisingly, were devastating for Lemieux, as he succumbed to the power of his man in the third round.
In a moment of pure candor, Morrell reveals that he’s followed Benavidez closely and envisions a future mega clash. Although the decision isn’t solely up to him, the secondary title holder gives an assumption as to when his showdown against Benavidez will finally take place.
“Maybe one year.”
