Former Olympian Darrelle Valsaint is hoping to extend his knockout run to five when he fights experienced Mexican Angel Ruiz in Orlando on Saturday.

Valsaint, who is on his way down to the attractive mix at 154lbs from middleweight, is 11-0 (9 KOs) but the visiting Ruiz is 18-3-1 (13 KOs) and represents the Orlando prospect’s stiffest test to date.

The all-southpaw clash is the co-main event on the ProBox TV bill at the Osceola Heritage Park in Kissimmee.

“I feel like it’s going to be a very good fight on my end, and a very good experience for me moving forwards,” said Valsaint, who boxed at the Tokyo 2020 Games, where he was the flag-bearer for Haiti.

“My confidence is amazing. I’m ready. I feel great. I’m excited for this fight. I was fighting at 160 and I’m going down to 154.”

Valsaint has been sparring the likes of Erickson Lubin and Marques Valle as he sharpens his tools, and through his development he has studied some of the very best boxers.

He’s taken tips from James Toney via Instagram, been to Roberto Duran’s house in Panama, and he’s been watching tape of Floyd Mayweather and southpaw stylist Michael Nunn. 

He is also aware that, by moving down to junior middleweight, he is entering one of boxing’s most competitive divisions, where the likes of Terence Crawford, Errol Spence, Sebastian Fundora, Israil Madrimov and Serhii Bohachuk currently reside.

“I know all the big names at 154, I don’t really know any prospects that’s coming up,” said Valsaint. “One guy I do want to spank is Xander [Zayas], Troy Isley, there’s a lot of guys. They’re gonna get it.

“I see myself cleaning out the division. I do see that. I see me being the top guy at 154 and moving up to 160 and doing the same thing.” 

Despite his lack of professional seasoning, Valsaint is confident in both his abilities and potential. Ruiz is a bridge to the next level, and the Floridian believes he will in time show he belongs at the highest level.

“I only have 11 fights but I’m very well-seasoned. I’m very comfortable in the ring now. I look like a pro now, and I’m only 22.

“I can’t wait to show you guys. I know everybody has got questions about Darrelle “Blast” Valsaint, but this fight will answer some questions. So tune in.”
