Without giving specific details of what might happen in the future, the featherweight champion of the World Boxing Association, Jesus Cuellar (28-1, 21KOs), will stay in California pending the rescheduling of his next defense.

Cuellar was scheduled to fight former three division champion Abner Mares on the 25th of June at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, but less than a week ago it was revealed that Mares was not approved for a license by the New York State Athletic Commission, after medical tests reportedly found an issue with Mares' vision.

The event at Barclays is headlined by a welterweight battle between Keith Thurman and Shawn Porter.

According to an official of Cuellar's team, it is a fact that he won't step into the ring on Saturday night and they are looking to fight as soon as possible.

"Jesus Cuellar will not fight on June 25 on the undercard of the card at New York City. He will continue with his training in California while waiting for news that could emerge next week," the team member told ESPN Deportes.

According to a source close to Cuellar's team, an attempt was made to find a replacement opponent when Mares fell out of the fight. However, because it was just one week away there wasn't much room to maneuver.

So far, it is not known if they will continue to pursue a new date with Mares, pending his ability to pass medical examinations in some other location, or whether they will have to find another opponent.

The bout would have been the first with Mares having Robert Garcia in his corner. That new partnership added an interesting storyline to the fight, because Garcia was previously the trainer of  Cuellar.
