Former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (50-2-1, 32 KOs) is planning to go for a knockout victory on Cinco De Mayo weekend.
The "Son of a Legend" is going to face his Mexican rival, Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (48-1-1, 34 KOs), on May 6th at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
There is a catch-weight of 164.5-pounds in place. Chavez Jr. is coming down from the super middleweight limit of 168, while Canelo is coming up from 154-pounds.
There has been bad blood for several years between the two boxers. To end their rivalry, Chavez Jr. has a clear goal of making a big statement by securing the knockout victory.
He wants to redeem himself in the eyes of the critics who believe he's not capable of achieving anything further at this point in his career.
"It's my motivation [to knock Canelo out]. It would be great. I'm going for the knockout. If it doesn't happen, then I want to win all the rounds, one by one until the last. In the latter it's best to say that I [will knock him out in the] eighth or ninth," Chavez Jr. said.
"[Losing this fight], it doesn't happen in my mind. I already lost twice. My two defeats have taught me more than my 50 wins. I only think about winning. I do not care about judges. People recognize [a victory] when you deserve it. I will celebrate and if I do not win [because of the judges], it is not in my hands. People are the greatest judge. There will be a lot of affection if the fight is stolen, I'll take that. I want to win. May the judges be just."
"People can get more money by betting on me [since I'm the underdog]. I don't pay attention to these things. In casinos you win and you lose. It does not mean anything. It would be weird to be the favorite [in this fight] because of what's happened in my career. Winning this fight would silence those who have criticized me in bad faith. I want to have more achievements like when I was world champion at middleweight. There is no world title [in this fight], but there are fights that are worth more than a belt."
