Unbeaten Venezuelan WBA light flyweight world champion Carlos CCC” Canizales (22-0-1, 17 KO’s), will not defend belt today in Colombia because of weight excess problems for his Mexican challenger, former champ Jesus “Negrito” Silvestre (37-7, 26 KO’s), for which their clash had to be canceled.
“Today I will not fight because my opponent (Silvestre) did not make the weight. I hope that soon I will return to the ring,” said Canizales to BoxingScene.
He was eager to make the third defense of the black and golden crown that he claimed by defeating Reiya Konshi (17-2, 7 KO’s) nearly 3 years ago in Kobe, Japan.
The heavy-handed 27-year-old Venezuelan – whose last battle was a win by points over Japanese former titlist Sho Kimura (19-3-2, 12 KO’s) in May of 2019 in China – has been interested in going back to Japan to unify WBA 108-pound belts against undefeated Japanese WBA “Super Champion” Hiroto Kyoguchi (14-0, 9 KO’s).
Will that fight get to happen in 2021? Boxing fans hope so as the war would pit two of the top-5 toughest men in the division.
The other 3 most dangerous fighters in the weight-class are unbeaten Japanese WBC king Kenshiro Teraji (17-0, 10 KO’s), Nicaraguan IBF Champion Félix “El Gemelo” Alvarado 35-2, 30 KO’s), and Mexican WBO world Champion “La Pulga” Elwin Soto Castro (18-1, 12 KO’s).
