SAN ANTONIO -- The thrill of making his first title defense in front of a raucous, hometown crowd is a memory that Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez will forever cherish.

The opportunity for a home game in a bid to become a two-division champion figures to be equally as memorable once he enters the ring for his vacant WBO flyweight title fight versus Mexico’s Cristian Gonzalez. The bout headlines a DAZN quadrupleheader from Boeing Center at Tech Port in San Antonio, which hosted the young Texan’s eighth-round knockout of former junior bantamweight king Srisaket Sor Rungvisai last June 25.

“When they told me I was going to fight again back home, it was like a dream come true,” Rodriguez told krikya360.com. “I loved the turnout we had when I fought Rungvisai. I came home as a new champion to defend my title.

“Now to be able to win my second world title at home Is just amazing for my career. It’s just a lot more motivating to make history in the actual city that I’m from.”

With a win, Rodriguez (17-0, 11KOs) will become San Antonio’s first-ever multi-division champion.

The 23-year-old returned home last summer less than five months after his first title win. It came in a twelve-round decision over former titlist Carlos Cuadras to win the WBC junior bantamweight title last February 5 in Phoenix, Arizona. Rodriguez was due to appear on the undercard in a bout at a maximum 110-pound limit before accepting the main event assignment and the move up in weight on just six days’ notice.

Rodriguez was all the way in his element for his first title defense versus Sor Rungvisai, whom he replaced in the win over Cuadras to win his belt. Their title fight was supposed to be his toughest test to that point in his career but he turned it into a hometown showcase en route to a sensational knockout victory.

One more title defense followed, a twelve-round win over Israel ‘Jiga’ Gonzalez last September 17 in Las Vegas before he decided to drop back down in weight.

Rodriguez enters his fight with Cristian Gonzalez (15-1, 6KOs) as a massive -3300 betting favorite according to bet365 sportsbook. The focal point of the evening will be a rising star returning home. Rodriguez regularly trains out of Robert Garcia’s facility in Riverside, California and must remain in fight mode at least through Saturday.

As for the most San Antonio thing he plans to do to celebrate—well, that part won’t be quite as headline-worthy.

“It's Easter on Sunday,” noted Rodriguez. “I’ll see what’s open and try to get some breakfast tacos.”
