Professional boxing returned to Cuba last night with the Agon Sports Cuban Fight Night at the 5-star Hotel Melia International in Varadero.
Montenegro heavyweight Dilan Prasovic, 18-6 (15 KOs), came close to an upset in the headliner when he knocked down Julio De La Cruz, 4-0 (4 KOs), in the second round with a left cross. But De La Cruz got up and knocked out Prasovic with devastating body punches in the third and won this WBA bridgerweight final eliminator. In total, Prasovic was down once in the second and three times in the third.
The sole non-Cuban Agon-promoted fighter on the bill, Spanish-Moroccan junior lightweight Moussa Gholam, 23-1 (13 KOs), stopped Dominican Misael Vazquez, 17-5-1 (15 KOs), in the third round to win the vacant WBA Continental America Gold title.
Light heavy Arlen López is now 4-0 (2 KOs) having defeated Argentinian Martin Ezequiel Bulacio, 14-9 (10 KOs), and capturing the vacant WBA Continental Latin America title.
In the show opener, two-time Cuban champ Yakelin Estornell turned pro with a TKO win over Lina Tejada, 13-6-1 (10 KOs), from Dominican Republic. The fight, scheduled for eight two-minute rounds, was stopped in the second and Estornell is now the WBA Fedelatin female welterweight champion.
Lightweight Lazaro Alvarez, 7-0 (4 KOs), floored Dominican Miguel Queliz Santos, 10-1-1 (4 KOs), twice en route to a stoppage when Santos didn’t come out for the eighth round. It was scheduled for 10 and Alvarez won the vacant WBA Continental Americas title.
Junior welterweight Erislandy Alvarez, 4-0 (2 KOs), knocked out Brainer Vazquez Soli, 21-6-1 (13 KOs), in the first round and won the vacant WBA Continental Latin America title.
