Alfredo “El Perro” Angulo suffered a tough defeat against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez last month as he lost back to back fights for the first time in his career. While Angulo may have been losing the fight, he never stopped fighting and continued coming forward. To Angulo and the crowd’s dismay, referee Tony Weeks decided to stop the fight in the 10th round as he felt Angulo had taken enough.

Angulo was visibly upset and did not agree with Weeks decision to stop the contest. His trainer Virgil Hunter echoed Angulo’s displeasure citing the stoppage wasn’t justified given Angulo was not hit with multiple unanswered punches and was only hit with one shot when Weeks stepped in.

Angulo was in Los Angeles and gave BoxingScene and other members of the media his first interview since his loss to Alvarez. He was asked now that some time had passed and he had a chance to think things through, if he still felt the same way regarding the stoppage.

“[Weeks] said he stopped the fight because of the difference in punching; but I always kept throwing. I want him to tell me why he didn’t stop the fight between Julio Cesar Chavez and Sergio Martinez. That’s a great question. Who was the referee? Tony Weeks. Why didn’t he stop that fight? Chavez never connected on Martinez until the final round. But for 11 rounds Martinez did what he wanted with Chavez. Why didn’t he stop that fight?,” Angulo would tell BoxingScene.

“I was connecting and I was throwing punches. And like I told Tony Weeks, if Canelo would’ve landed two or three punches and I didn’t react then I would’ve understood and agreed; but I never stopped throwing back. I was coming on when Tony jumped in. That was the anger the people had because the people really know El Perro and they know I start slow and come on. He knows and everybody knew that there were three more rounds and in those three rounds, Canelo could’ve gone”.

Sergio Martinez was thoroughly dominating Julio Cesar Chavez in their middleweight showdown and it wasn’t until the 12th and final round that Chavez was finally able to hurt Martinez and almost pulled off one of the biggest upsets and comebacks boxing has ever seen.

Angulo points to that fight in particular to argue that a fighter has a chance to turn things around until the very last second of a bout and believes Weeks should’ve gave him that opportunity. El Perro does admit he didn’t start the fight off well but felt he was picking up momentum and getting stronger as the fight went on.

“Sincerely my body starting reacting from the 5th or 6th round and up. Normally I’m a fighter that starts from less to more. This time it took me 3 to 4 more round than it would normally take. It made me very angry and made me so frustrated and I told Tony Weeks ‘I respect your work very much. I’ve recognized your work for many years’. He was the referee in my first title fight. I never thought he’d make that type of decision. He says he knows the way I fight. And yes, I wasn’t the Perro that has fought on better nights but I was just starting to walk and come on. And if he knows me like he said, he should’ve known that,” stated Angulo.

Angulo was happy to speak his peace on the situation and despite the fight not going his way, he’s already ready to start training again for his next fight. He’d definitely welcome a rematch with Canelo but ultimately leaves the decision on who he fights next to his team. Angulo would like to get back in the ring by the summer if possible.
