Comments Thread For: The Boxing Judge Tom Schreck: How perception and bias shaped the Muhammad Ali-Ken Norton trilogy

Muhammad Ali and Ken Norton fought three times in the 1970s. The record shows Ali winning two out of three, but had you asked most ringside observers ? and even Ali himself ? Norton may have deserved to sweep the series. So how did the decisions go the other way?

Just call it what it is, blatant favoritism and corruption.

Thank you Mr. Schreck , this piece was really interesting. The ways that our brains perceive things are fascinating. A lot of what we see we don't really see , our minds just fill in the blanks. It's good to get a Judges perspective on this. Hopefully this kind of stuff is being taught to judges so that they can be aware of it and work around it.

The second fight could have gone either way. Norton won the third IMO. Norton vs Holmes could have gone either way, and the scoring reflected that.

Norton's style gave Ali lots of problems. I thought Ali won the 2nd fight but lost the first and third fight for sure.

Norton won all three fights and I thought Frazier deserved the W in the second Ali fight too.

I love those old-school boxing posters.
Back in the day they didn't have all this dedicated media output - these posters was about all they had.
So primitive yet somehow kindled the imagination and made us all want to see the fights.
