A good number on this list were never even world champions, such was the times. Loi and Cerdan are the two stand out fighters, two of the very best in the whole of boxing during this time period.

The French produced a lot of quality fighters during this time. The French and the Italians produced the lion's share of the best European fighters throughout history but unfortunately both countries are producing next to nothing right now.

Mario D'Agata is the only ever deaf world champion.

Cerdan ruled Europe at Welter & Middle although he was born in Algeria which at that time was under French controll he's considered a Euro boxer. He came here and defeated Tony Zale who was out of his prime but still viable.
He hung right with Jake untoil a dislocsted shoulder tko'd him.
I read about his career years ago and he could box very well and had no problem getting rough if need be. Well conditioned and well schooled and willing to go the disrtance hard! I like him!

Loi seems generally to get a lot of love. Since he is rated at no.1 here, you should make room in the rankings for this guy:

Good shout, he just missed the cut along with Rinaldi, Proietti and Young Martin, he could certainly feature somewhere down the bottom but I favoured Rollo and Patterson over him. Johansen must have been a great learning fight for Loi as Loi won the return and was undefeated from this fight in 1952 until Carlos Ortiz defeated him in 1960.

Great list. Some names I not familiar with there which will take time to read up on.

Think a list by weight class/decade would be great too. Top 5 MW's of 1940's for example.

              Keep up good work.

The reports I've read from the Johansen-Loi fight noted that Loi was surprisingly defensive and that Johansen won a clear decision.

May I ask why you dont have Papp any higher on your list?

I have Papp low because I was only judging pro careers and Papp's pro career really didn't involve him fighting too many top fighters. He didn't turn pro until 31, if he had been allowed to fight Giardello for the middleweight crown then his standing could have been quite different. If I had also included the full weight of amateur careers in this list then of course Papp would be up there with Loi and Cerdan.

Turpin vs Cerdan could have been a world class event if Marcel had lived and the years matched.
