World Boxing Council President Mauricio Sulaiman is hoping that Jermall Charlo and Gennady Golovkin move forward with an ordered WBC final middleweight eliminator.
The current WBC world champion is Mexican superstar Saul "Canelo" Alvarez.
Canelo captured the title back in September, with a twelve round majority decision over Golovkin at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
At the WBC's annual convention in October, the sanctioning body approved Canelo's request to take a voluntary fight.
On December 15th, Canelo will move up to super middleweight to challenge WBA "regular" champion Rocky Fielding.
“He’s a champion and the rules allow a champion to request a special fight, as we have done countless times in the past. So he will be fighting, he will be representing the WBC and after the fight we will see what the decision is," Sulaiman said to .
Golovkin made a request to receive an immediate trilogy fight with Canelo - but the WBC denied that request and ordered him to face the WBC interim-champion, Charlo, in a final eliminator. The winner would land Canelo.
Charlo is taking a stay busy fight next month against Willie Monroe - and Golovkin is not planning to fight again until next year.
“The WBC ordered Charlo, who is the Interim champion and mandatory, to fight against Golovkin. Because GGG lost his title in a highly disputed, close fight and deserves to remain close to the action," Sulaiman said.
"Instead of ordering Charlo to go directly as mandatory, Golovkin requested a direct rematch, and Canelo requested a voluntary. We mixed everything up, we ordered Charlo-Golovkin. Hopefully it will take place. The winner of that fight is a major attraction to fight Canelo. I feel happy, I hope it happens. We will see.”
