On May 13, at Allianz Cloud in Milan, Italy, Opi Since 82 and Matchroom will stage a tripleheader event.
In the headliner, WBO Intercontinental super middleweight champion Daniele Scardina (20-0 with 16 KOs) will defend against former WBA "regular" super middleweight champion Giovanni De Carolis (29-10-1 with 13 KOs).
The right person to discuss the Scardina-De Carolis showdown – which is regarded as a big fight in Italy – is Scardina’s coach Dino Spencer, who owns the 5th Street Gym in Miami Beach.
Ho was Scardina’s training for the fight against Giovanni De Carolis?
“The situation couldn’t be more perfect. Recently, we went to Gennady Golovkin’s training camp which was 1 hour from my gym. Daniele sparred with Golovkin and GGG complimented him! That’s why I am confident that Daniele will beat Giovanni De Carolis on May 13.”
What do you think of Giovanni De Carolis?
“I think that Giovanni is a great professional and he proved it going to Germany to fight WBA world super middleweight champion Vincent Feigenbutz and defeating him by 11th round TKO. I know that Giovanni trains for the entire year and not only when he has a fight. Daniele is the same and that’s very important. If a fighter has a reputation of training 365 days a year, he can get more opportunities like being called as a last minute substitute in a major fight that cannot be postponed for several reasons.
Many fighters train with passion at the start of their career. When they win a title, then a second one, they consider themselves phenomenons and train with less intensity. That’s not Daniele’s attitude: he always trains with passion like he has to fight against the world champion. I know that Giovanni De Carolis lost some fights that he was supposed to win, but that happens to everybody. In my mind, Daniele will fight the WBA World champion on May 13.”
If Daniele beats De Carolis, what will be his next goal?
“Everybody knows that we want a world title shot. I trust Opi Since 82, they proved to have the skills to lead a fighter to a world title shot. I have told them that we are willing to fight every champion in his backyard. I have been doing this job for 30 years and believe me when I say that Daniele is ready to fight any world super middleweight champion. Realistically, he will get a title shot within two years.”
In Italy Daniele became famous by participating in primetime tv shows like 'Dancing With The Stars.' How famous is he in Miami Beach?
“My gym is full of professional boxers, some world champions, entertainment stars and therefore is also full of journalists who know Daniele and write about him. Daniele could bring a crowd to a fight in Miami Beach as well. In the near future, I don’t think that he will fight here because the fights that we are interested in are in New York, Atlantic City, London, Milan and other cities.”
