Tony Jeffries admits his career is in doubt because of a hand injury which is proving impossible to cure.

The light-heavyweight, who won a bronze medal at the 2008 Olympics, has impressed in the professional ranks since leaving the amateur scene but has not fought since Spetember 2011 due to the problem.

Surgery the following month has not worked and a visit to a leading surgeon in the US, David Slutsky, has also failed to bring the fighter positive news.

"I went to see him in the suburb of Torrance, California, on Thursday to get the terrible news that there's not much they can do," Jeffries told the Northern Echo.

The 27-year-old will now resort to platelet rich plasma treatment, which involves injecting blood cells into the hand in a last-ditch bid to save his career.

Jeffries added: "This really does seem the last resort for my hands and for my career in boxing."
