According to Tom Loeffler, managing director of K2 Promotions, IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (27-0, 24KOs) is willing to face WBO beltholder Peter Quillin (29-0, 21KOs) in his next fight - but only if the match takes place on HBO. The battle of networks could become an issue, as Quillin fights exclusively on Showtime. Quillin is promoted by Golden Boy Promotions, and earlier this year HBO cut their business ties with Golden Boy. Despite the promotional complications, Loeffler is confident a deal can be reached if HBO televises the match.
"Gennady fights exclusively on HBO. I think the Quillin fight can be made. Gennady is clearly above where Quillin is at right now. He's a much more popular fighter and sells more tickets. No disrespect to Peter, he's a great champion and he's fought at the Barclays Center before and he fights on Showtime, but if the fight is going to be made it's going to be made on HBO, because we feel they have a bigger budget, and get the higher ratings, and a performance like this tonight - we feel that it will be on HBO," Loffler said.
