World Boxing Council President Jose Sulaiman said it wasn't easy to order WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (44-0-1, 31KOs) to fight Diamond champion Sergio Martinez (48-2-2, 27KOs). Sulaiman, while realizing the danger involved in facing Martinez, believes the time has come for Chavez Jr. to showcase his worth as a champion to the world. At the WBC's convention at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, Chavez was ordered to fight Martinez next - unless their respective promoters can reach an alternate agreement.
“Julio César Chavez Jr. is like my godson. I a lot care for him, and also for Sergio who has always received my support and the care of the WBC. Nevertheless, this organization has rules and the Board of the WBC have taken a decision 0 Julio will have to face Sergio and show everybody why he’s the world champion," Sulaiman said.
