Boxing Scene has been informed that former two-time world title challenger Stephen Smith will fight Spain's Juli Giner for the vacant European Super Featherweight title later this year.

Smith, brother to fellow fighters Paul, Callum and Liam, faced Jason Sosa and Jose Pedraza for the WBA and IBF world titles respectively in 2016, coming up short on both occasions.

The European Boxing Union website states on their website that the fight will take place in November or December in London.

Our source told 'Scene that the fight could land on the Tony Bellew-David Haye heavyweight rematch but said that matters regarding that bout are "up in the air" right now.

With Smith and Bellew both promoted by Matchroom, and from Liverpool, it would make sense to add another Scouse connection for travelling supporters should the fight land in the capital.

Juli Giner, 34 has only boxed once away from home in his 24 fight career (21-1-1, 8 KOs) winning in France against Roman Jacob to claim the European 130lbs belt with an 8th round stoppage.

Smith, a former British champion at Featherweight and Super Featherweight, as well as gaining Commonwealth honours at Feather, will box for a European title for the first time in his 28 fight career (25-3, 15 KOs).

Smith's promoter Eddie Hearn was unavailable for comment at time of writing.

Another European title shot looks on the cards for a second Brit as well in November. We understand that Smith's compatriot Dereck Chisora will take on Agit Kabayel (16-0, 12 KOs) for the German's Heavyweight title in Monte Carlo. A card that will also feature Jamie McDonnell taking on Liborio Solis for the second time in defence of his WBA Bantamweight title.

Thirty-three year old Chisora had hoped to land a rematch with rival Dillian Whyte after their 2016 fight of the year contender. A second fight between the pair could take place early next year should Chisora and Whyte come through their next bouts successfully. Whyte may land a fight with Lucas Browne this year.
