With such a big fight weekend in Las Vegas, there was bound to be a little bit of drama along the way.
For Friday's offering of Showtime's ShoBox: The New Generation, it came in the form of one scale fail among the eight participants slated to appear on the telecast. Juan Carlos Cordones miserably missed weight for his planned six-round lightweight clash versus unbeaten Roland Romero, who was among the seven boxers to successfully make weight for Friday's quadrupleheader (10:30pm ET/7:30pm PT) from Sam's Town Live in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Headlining the card, Sacramento's Xavier Martinez (14-0, 10KOs) faces Philippines' Jessie Cris Rosales (22-3-1, 10KOs) in a scheduled 10-round junior lightweight contest. Martinez weighed 130.8 pounds for his second straight Shobox appearance, having scored a 3rd round knockout of John Vincent Moralde in his network debut this past April. Rosales weighed 132.4 pounds.
Brooklyn's Richardson Hitchins (9-0, 5KOs)—who represented Haiti in the 2016 Rio Olympics—weighed 144 pounds for his first scheduled 10-round bout, as he faces locally based Kevin Johnson (7-1, 4KOs) who weighed 143.2 pounds in the evening's chief support.
Kevin Newman (10-1-1, 6KOs) and Mark Hernandez (14-2-1, 3KOs) both weighed 165 pounds in a rematch to their August 2017 clash, in which Hernandez—a 26 year old from Fresno, California—emerged victorious by unanimous decision. Locally-based Newman has since won three straight, all taking place at this very venue.
Las Vegas' Romero (9-0, 8KOs) was already determined to bring an early and miserable ending to his opponent's evening, though Thursday's weigh-in follies will only further fuel those flames. The unbeaten 24 year old came in right at the contracted 138 pound-limit for his scheduled six round clash with Dominican Republic's Cordones (14-1, 9KOs), who was still well over the mark at 141.8 pounds on his second try.
As this goes to publish, the bout will still move forward as planned with Cordones likely to pay a hefty fine for missing weight.
