Shawn McCalman remained unbeaten by defeating Money Powell IV in a largely uneventful light heavyweight fight Friday night in Atlanta.
Powell didn’t let his hands go enough to impress the judges, each of whom scored the action for the left-handed McCalman at OTX Arena. Richard Sells (78-74) and Erik Gilbert (78-74) scored six rounds apiece for McCalman, who won seven rounds according to Pat Cronin (79-73).
McCalman, of Aurora, Colorado, improved to 14-0 (7 KOs). Powell, of Fort Mitchell, Alabama, slipped to 13-2 (8 KOs).
DAZN streamed McCalman’s win as part of its OTX Boxing series.
Powell didn’t fight with a sense of urgency in an eighth round in which he ultimately needed to knock out McCalman to win. McCalman didn’t do much during those final three minutes, either, but he was way ahead on the scorecards.
A short right by Powell caught McCalman with just under a minute to go in the seventh round. Powell landed a right uppercut about 10 seconds later as well.
A lead right hand and then a left hook by Powell landed with just under 1:50 on the clock in the seventh round. McCalman split Powell’s guard with a left about 45 seconds into the seventh round.
Powell landed a left hook and McCalman grazed Powell with a left in an exchange just before the sixth round concluded. McCalman caught Powell with a left in an exchange barely 20 seconds into the sixth round.
Powell kept McCalman from landing many punches during the fifth round, when Powell connected enough to win it.
A right hand and then a counter left hook by Powell knocked McCalman off balance with just under 1:50 remaining in the fourth round.
McCalman’s straight left landed with about a minute remaining in the third round. Another left by McCalman connected later in the third round, which caused Powell to tie him up.
Both boxers defended themselves well during a second round that lacked action.
McCalman caught Powell with a counter right hand that landed with just under 20 seconds to go in the first round. Powell responded by catching McCalman with a left hook before the opening round concluded.
