WBO welterweight champion Sandy Ryan (7-1-1, 3 KOs) produced the best performance of her career with a one-sided aggressive display against the former two-weight world champion Terri Harper (14-2-2, 6 KOs).
Doncaster-based fighter Harper was withdrawn from the contest by trainer Stefy Bull following the conclusion of the fourth round.
Ryan returned to winning ways in emphatic fashion following her controversial draw against Jessica McCaskill (12-3-1, 5 KOs) in September. The WBO champion missed out on unifying the WBA and WBC titles against the American with a draw. Changes soon came for Ryan, who left the comforts of the UK behind.
Ryan parted ways with former trainer and manager Clifton Mitchell, relocated to Las Vegas and hired Brian Peters as her new manager. Now she is aiming to capture all of the belts at welterweight and become an undisputed champion following her successful night against Harper in Sheffield.
“I want to be undisputed,” Ryan said at the post-fight press conference. “I will take any fight that leads me that way [in becoming undisputed]. There are massive fights with U.K. girls and U.S. girls.
“Natasha Jonas has a belt, the WBC belt is vacant, and Jessica McCaskill and Lauren Price are fighting [on April 20], but I will take any fight.”
Promoter Eddie Hearn agreed that the route to becoming undisputed champion is the ideal path and that the WBO champion needs to be in big fights, adding the name of former undisputed super-lightweight champion Chantelle Cameron (18-1, 8 KOs) as a possible option.
“It really is now about being in big fights for Sandy," Hearn added. "She is in that stage of her career where she does not want to make a voluntary defense against someone who does not have a big name.
“The only voluntary defense out there for me is Chantelle Cameron. I think it is an incredible fight. Sandy didn’t mention her name, but she told me on Friday night that she would love that fight.
“Chantelle is also looking at massive fights, so we are looking at those kinds of fights for Sandy.”
Hearn also expressed his willingness to explore an opportunity for Ryan to face IBF titleholder, Natasha Jonas (15-2, 1 9 KOs), even if it meant Ryan and Jonas boxed on the platform of rival broadcaster Sky Sports and was promoted by Boxxer.
“I think realistically Natasha Jonas might fancy a fight, and we have no problem with Sandy doing the fight on Sky if it is the right opportunity," Hearn admitted.
“If we have to go over there and challenge, or we’ll make a big offer to do the fight on DAZN, we have to allow Sandy to roam and challenge for all of the belts.”
“If it is a case of them saying, ‘We are not fighting over there,’ we will say, ‘We will go and fight over there’ then. It really is a big fight."
