According to Abel Sanchez, head trainer of IBF/IBO/WBC/WBA middleweight champion Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin (36-0, 33KOs), they were never worried during last Saturday's fight with IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook (36-1, 25KOs).
Golovkin traveled across the ocean to the O2 Arena in London to defend his belts against Brook before a packed house at the venue.
The fight was not exactly the mismatch that everyone had predicted. Brook stood his ground and landed some very good shots on Golovkin. During the second round especially, Brook let his hands go and caught Golovkin was a huge uppercut.
Sanchez was never concerned when Golovkin was getting tagged in the fight and there was no sense of urgency to turn the tide when GGG sat in his corner between rounds.
"There was no concern in our corner, there was no concern with Gennady. If you recall, in the second round of the Mayweather-Mosley fight, Mayweather was wobbled, Gennady was never wobbled. Any fighter can be hit by a good shot and hurt, any fighter can be hit by a lot of shots just by being in a fight with an elite fighter. It wasn’t a surprise," Sanchez told .
The fight came to a close during the fifth round, when Brook's trainer threw in the towel. Brook had broken his right eye socket during the second round and the injury grew worse as the fight played out. If the fight would have continued, Sanchez believes it wouldn't have lasted too much longer.
"[It wouldn't have lasted] much longer, but it’s not so much about the fight lasting, it’s the damage that Kell Brook would have sustained. Gennady was hitting him with some clean shots and from what we understand now, it was a smart move from their corner to stop the fight. The damage in his eye required an operation to fix it. If you look at Antonio Margarito’s eye, he’s in pretty bad shape. If you remember when Erislandy Lara fought Alfredo Angulo, he had a damaged eye and he quit, he turned his back. All credit to Kell Brook, he hung in there and fought for as long as he could, but I’m sure the corner noticed that there was something definitely wrong," Sanchez said.
